About the adventure

This is a Campaign set in the SS Seikatsu and its Walled City— the former is a cyberpunk, space-borne city; while the other is an autonomous acropolis inspired by the Kowloon Walled City. Both exist within the Homebrew world of Terra Nostalgia— a setting designed after a post-cyberpunk world with retro-futurist characteristics. *Expect Heavy RP, with combat encounters customized toward the narrative and themes of the story. *Expect a living world, with NPCs that feel alive and an environment that responds to your actions (and inaction). *Expect a commitment to make sure your characters are fully integrated not just into the narrative, but into the nitty-gritty of the world and its themes. All this and more, aboard the SS Seikatsu! What exactly is the SS Seikatsu? The SS Seikatsu is utopia with a price tag. Far above the stars, Seikatsu was supposed to be a second chance at paradise. Neo Shangri-La made manifest. The administrators believed that they had learned from history's past mistakes. The promised land of price stability, where ethics and profit margin priorities were supposed to coexist in a kumbaya chorus. At first glance, Seikatsu is exactly what it promised— sleek, futuristic and impeccable, its platinum visage gleams against the dark expanse like artificial starlight. Scratch the surface however, and you'll be staring at a star-age Potemkin village— for no greater are the blighted marks against the Seikatsu— than its very own Walled City, which spits in the face of the supposed empyrean paradise. Yes, the Walled City— a quarantined acropolis isolated inside the SS Seikatsu, whose depths reach far beneath the surface of the space station. The Walled City, which exists as an autonomous region within Seikatsu— serves as an escape for the lawless, desperate, and peculiar. Inside the Walled City, things are known to get quite weird. Yet even that weirdness is an undeniable spark of life, just waiting to blow up into a magnificent inferno. Premise: The SS Seikatsu's Walled City holds a great many secrets, though none with as significant an implication as the one built into its very foundation. A researcher by the name of Taara supposedly uncovered this truth of the Walled City, a truth that apparently redefines life and death. Unfortunately, Taara went missing shortly after— along with everything she had learned. Your characters are a group of individuals hired by a close confidant of Taara to spearhead the mission following her trail throughout Seikatsu and its Walled City, while uncovering their closely-guarded secrets. Soundtrack: Lo-fi Jazz Fusion, Vapourwave, City-Pop, Oriental Fusion Electronica Themes: Tech Noir, Mystery, Cyberpunk, Urban Sci-fi, Surrealism Setting inspired by the Kowloon Walled City and media like Disco Elysium, Citizen Sleeper, Neuromancer and various properties of cyberpunk and weird fiction.

About me

Hey all, I'm a forever DM for about 5 years who has worked primarily with D&D 5e, and my love for TTRPGs began alongside a love for world-building and co-operative storytelling. As I began building my worlds, I wanted to have people interact with them, play in them, tell stories through them; and TTRPGs provided a perfect outlet. Over the years I've DM'ed a number of different groups, and a couple long-term ones; and the one thing that I continue to love seeing more than anything else is my players immersed and enjoying themselves as the characters and stories they weave into these worlds take shape and become something truly wonderful.

Character creation

Creating your character

You can create a character in dndbeyond (with most, if not all, the existing sourcebooks shared for your use) In this case, please download the Beyond20 Chrome Extension so that your rolls appear in the Foundry. The extension can be found here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/beyond-20/gnblbpbepfbfmoobegdogkglpbhcjofh?hl=en Alternatively, you can create a character directly through roll20 using its charactermancer. (Both have content sharing enabled, in case there is any official content that is not amongst the shared material, you're still free to use them— I'll simply add it manually to your character sheet.) -Characters start at level 5. -Ability Scores must be generated through Point Buy or the Standard Array. -Hit Points for the first 3 levels are maxed -Multiclassing and Feats are allowed. -Characters may replace their background feature for a feat at level 1. -Customizing Your Origin and all optional class features are allowed. -If you would like to use homebrew materials, speak with me before character creation and we can discuss it. Regarding Equipment: -You gain the starting equipment from your class. -You are allowed to add one uncommon item. Should they be interested, players may also present character ideas that do not necessarily fit with what is provided by the official class/race options; which can be further developed between player and DM during the character building period. The details regarding character building will be discussed in the Session 0, and players can work on building their characters after the session. I usually give my players a week to finalize their characters, and if they have any questions or help with the process, they're free to reach out to me through discord.

The current party

LGBTQ+ and Beginners Welcome! Characters start at level 6. Session 0 is free, if you join after session 0 we can schedule a one-on-one call during the week to serve as a mini-session 0.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

The only requirements I ask from my players is to have a Discord account, a working microphone, and a Roll20 account. Familiarity with the rules would make things easier for me, though I'm more than ready to walk newcomers through the rules, I've done it plenty of times and I don't mind doing it again. Optionally, the players may also use their D&D Beyond account and the Beyond 20 browser extension.

What Aaron L brings to the table

The game will be played through a number of maps and scenes provided by me through Roll20 for better scene visualisation and interactivity. Players can provide me with a character image for their token, alternatively I can create one for them, should they prefer. I support both Roll20 character sheets and DnD Beyond character sheets; you can pick whichever works for you. Both have content sharing enabled for you to use the sourcebooks I've purchased, should you be interested. Regardless, all published WotC content is also allowed at my games in case there are options players want to try but are not able to be provided by me.

Homebrew rules

There will be a document that players can go through which outline all the homebrew rules and mechanics of the games, however I can list out the general homebrew rules as follows: Study Target: Each player character has a ‘Study Target’ skill that they are proficient in, which is tied to either their Wisdom or Intelligence modifier. This skill may be used as a free action during their turn in combat in order to target a creature and learn its traits and the names of any special abilities it may have. Study Target may then be further used to learn the details of a particular ability, which is particularly useful for homebrew creatures. Study Target may also be used to learn information about the battle environment. Healing Consumables: You may use any healing consumable on yourself as a bonus action. Using it on another creature counts as a full action. Swapping Held Items: You may swap held items as much as needed on a turn, with the exception of shields— which you may don/doff only once on your turn as a free action. Non-Lethal Attacks: You may declare any type of attack or saving throw, including ranged or spell— as a non-lethal attack. Flanking: Flanking a creature will provide +2 to the attack roll against that creature. Repositioning: When entering combat, if both sides are aware of the other once combat starts, the creatures may move up to half their movement speed once combat begins. if one side of the encounter begins with the surprised condition— the other may move up to their total movement in any direction before combat begins. High Ground: All attacks made against creatures who are standing on terrain at least 30 ft above the attacker will be done so as if the target is under half cover. Level 1 Feat: You may choose to replace the background feature of your character with a feat at level 1. Max HP: Your HP for the first 3 levels is rolled at maximum (does not apply for oneshots where we instead use the fixed value). Inspiration: Inspiration is now granted in the case of rolling a natural 1. Heroic Inspiration: You can now hold a pool of GM Inspiration equal to 3 at a time, which is all spent once session ends. You may use the GM inspiration to reroll your d20 rolls, or to allow an ally to reroll a d20 roll by using a reaction. Only a single use of inspiration can be used per roll.

Safety

How Aaron L creates a safe table

This campaign takes place within a cyberpunk/post-cyberpunk homebrew setting. While I am aware that there are other systems that cater to such genres, I decided to stick with DnD 5e due to convenience and familiarity, both on my part as a DM and for any potential players. This does mean that many elements from traditional DnD are reflavoured to fit the setting, though all relevant changes will be communicated with the players. The games I run will often include a number of adult themes, including, but not limited to, descriptions of graphic violence, swearing, etc. There will be a free session 0 wherein any concerns or questions regarding the content of the games can be discussed and adjusted accordingly. Roll20 itself has a number of safety features integrated within the client, and I always encourage any of my players to make full use of them whenever they see fit. Furthermore, players are always free to contact me directly through discord during and out of sessions, for whatever questions or concerns they may have. Much of what serves as the primer for the campaign (character building, questions about the setting/world, Roll20 tools and UI, atmosphere and tone, and any other questions) will be covered and discussed in the free Session 0. Once everything is set and everyone's satisfied, we'll be ready to get started proper with Session 1.
