About the adventure

You have died. Yet your soul remains. While your body rots somewhere, your spirit drifted, aimless and lost. Death and its servants have collected you and those like you, though you are merely echoes of your selves. They seek to finalize your passage, comforting your spirit, though it remains stubborn, confused, or ignorant. By gathering you together and reconnecting you to what you once were, there is hope that you may accept Death, and find peace. But an untethered soul is vulnerable. Spiritual predators crave the chance to exploit and devour unclaimed souls, and the memories of a life lived may prove more tempting than accepting Death and an unknown beyond. This is a storytelling and roleplay focused game, intended for experienced players (though new players are welcome). The focus is on the characters learning about who they were in life, and what it is that prevents them from passing on. Leveling up reflects your character remembering more of who they were in life, rather than garnering new skills and abilities through your experiences. The more your character connects to their time alive, the closer they get to finding peace and passing on, though the memories of life also make the fear of death greater...

About me

Hi, I'm Jonathan! I've been around TTRPGs for my entire life. I love them a lot! It fills me with joy to tell stories together with others and have fun together! I've joined StartPlaying as a GM because I have too many worlds and stories I want to tell, and not enough friends to share them with... yet. I've been around games a lot, with both veteran players, and people completely new to table top games. I'm good at adapting to my players, providing challenges and new ideas for experienced players, and a welcoming casual environment for new players. With a background in theater and writing, my games tend to focus on storytelling and Role-Play, with an emphasis on emotional character growth that ties into the plot. That said, I do enjoy game mechanics and can provide fun opportunities to those more interested in the math and numbers of the game. But most importantly, I bring new and unique ideas into games. If you're interested in compelling settings inspired by history and mythology that you've never seen before, come play with me! I'll take you on some truly excellent adventures!

Character creation

Creating your character

Our first session will be a "session 0" where I can elaborate on the game's premise, clarify any questions, and we work together to make characters. Characters will be created on Roll20, though I will also make pdf backups/copies of character sheets for both the players book-keeping and my own. Characters will start at level 1, and we will use Pathfinder's 25 point "point-buy" system for determining ability scores. Due to the nature of this game, a significant part of the plot revolves around the characters learning about who they were. As a result, it may be less rewarding to plan too far ahead in terms of your character's mechanics and levels. For your characters I will allow any published Pathfinder class, with the expectation that you will have a decent understanding of it's mechanics. I will allow most published races. I request that characters lean towards "Core Races" (those found in the Core Rulebook), along with orcs, goblins, and kobolds. While I will allow uncommon and exotic races, I request that they be a rarity. The only races I won't allow are Samsaran and Duskwalker, as the inherent nature of these races goes against the premise of the plot. If you have any homebrew options you would like to bring, send them to me over email or discord at least 24 hours before session 0, so I can read over them and determine if I will allow them in the game.

The current party

Session 0 is free. We may discuss player availability and possible rescheduling in Session 0. Session 0 is likely going to run slightly shorter than an ordinary session, 3-4 hours. Most sessions will try to be 4 hours, though they have a tendency to run a bit longer.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Yes you will need to have a webcam and microphone. They do not need to be fancy, your computer camera and microphone should work, just make sure they're working ahead of time. In addition, a reliable internet connection is preferred. As this will be online, you will need both a Discord and Roll20 account. Discord is how we will talk to one another, and we will be running the sessions on Roll20. You do not need Pathfinder books. I prefer if my players do own some of the materials, though it is not necessary, and I can provide access to materials if you need them. We will be making characters together in session 0. Having a character concept beforehand will benefit you though, it will allow you to have some aspects of your character from the get-go that add to the mystery of the campaign.

What Jonathan brings to the table

My games tend to be "Narrative-first", with more emphasis put on the story, roleplay, and characters than on the rules and game mechanics. I definitely use them, and love to have rules that emphasize the story. I try to bring in custom maps when I play, and enjoy designing memorable cinematic encounters. I also like to utilize Virtual TableTop assets like custom lighting, and music from original artists as long as it does not distract from the game. Though the two greatest strengths I bring as a GM are my voice acting, and original concepts for games and worlds.

How Jonathan creates a safe table

The safety and comfort of my players is my number 1 priority. Everything else comes afterwards. We cannot have fun otherwise. During Session 0, I will lay out some topics that may come up from Roleplay, and discuss openly if players are comfortable with these topics. This is how we will develop a "Lines & Veils" list, which players will be expected to adhere to. RPGs are improv in nature, and sometimes things come up that players were not prepared for. If a player feels overwhelmed or uncomfortable they are always welcome to step away or request a break. If it is due to a topic or subject they are uncomfortable with, players are welcome to send me direct messages during play as their "N card", and verbally say "X" or simply request we not continue with the scene. Hopefully though, this should not be necessary, as I try to check in with my players, letting them know when upcoming content may be uncomfortable. Finally, I value hearing from my players after session, and usually invite players to discuss what they liked about the session as we wrap up, along with what their plans and theories are, and if there's anything they disliked, or had questions about that I can address then or as we move forward in play.
