About me
It all began Thanksgiving Day when I was 10 years old. I found my uncleβs Dungeons & Dragons red box with the warrior on the cover battling against a dragon. I was instantly drawn to it and begged my uncle to teach me how to play. Less than a year later, I was running adventures for my friends, igniting their and my imaginations as we told stories of heroics and fantasy. As the child of a Navy sailor who moved around a lot, D&D was always my constant and my way of connecting with like-minded people I met. Fast forward to now. Over the years, I have told hundreds of stories with adventurers and friends. Focusing on heavy roleplay and cinematic combat, I aim to bring years of improv theatre to life by driving stories focused on the playerβs characters and the decisions they make. Nothing is too wild as we collaboratively build worlds and create adventures that will fill the halls of the legends of those worlds. Come join me. There are still so many tales to tell.

Anthony is my favorite DM hands down. He's amazing at creating a interesting environment and incorporating his players characters and backstories into the plot of his games. Even the players that aren't as intense creatively with their backstories he makes them fit in and have meaning. It really feels like group storytelling but in a stable and exciting environment. He's also very patience with new players and can help you know how to take advantage of your character's skills if you're a new player. The games are well paced with RP and interesting battles and stay on schedule. The times we went over we had stopped on a good stopping point but all agreed we were free to play a half an hour more. He also give a good environment for balance. There has been times where I worried that other players but he does an amazing job at making sure everyone gets play time and included in. Also there are good balances of consequences to doing dumb things lol. I cannot recommend him enough. I'm excited to play more games and enjoy making characters I'm interested in and getting to play out their stories with other cool players.
Coming from an anxious newbie: really enjoyable to play alongside, easy to get along with, very patient and kind. I appreciate the gentle encouragement to consider including roleplay although making it clear it's not necessary. Great sense of humor. I look forward to our sessions every week!
Anthony has a wonderful way of building up special ideas and mechanics for your characters, as well as makes and plays lovable NPCs of many different strokes! They show a lot of interest in making sure your characters feel connected and part of the world and isnβt afraid of doing some more unconventional ideas for their campaigns! I love playing with them, and theyβre a delight to see in whatever tone of a story they make.
Great DM, if you love immersive gameplay. He blends the rules of the game with great storytelling and cool character moments. He allows creativity for each individual player for their character and works with each player in their character narrative. If you love to laugh with cool nerd and pop culture jokes with a good group then this DM will fit your style!
Character creation
Creating your character
Level 1 characters can be created beforehand (including with my assistance, if needed) using the standard array or point buy. All classes are allowed, but races are restricted to those in the Playerβs Handbook (sub races outside of the PHB can be requested with DM approval). Your character will awaken in Briarstone Asylum unaware of their backstory. In lieu of backgrounds, there will be specific campaign traits available to each character. See the Recruiting Notes for the Google Doc if you want a headstart before Session Zero. During session zero, we will discuss your character's bonds to the rest of the party, what to expect from the world, my play style, and the few house rules I use. Alternatively, pre-generated characters will be available.
The group just arrived at the port city of Cassomir in their hunt for clues to lead them to the one man who can bring the King in Yellow to the Material Plane, only to realize that reality is not what it seems. The party is currently level 11. The group consists of a wizard, a monk, a druid, and an illrigger. Full recap of the campaign can be provided by request. This campaign uses the revised 2024 rule set.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
A webcam is not required, but a microphone that is good enough for everyone to hear you in a Discord call will be necessary. Most importantly, though, just bring your sense of adventure, humor, and fun! Dice will be rolled on D&D Beyond.
What Anthony McKinstry brings to the table
30 years of love for running D&D, access to my entire D&D library (which includes nearly everything) on D&D Beyond, maps and assets delved from various high-quality mapmakers, a whole slew of voices (some even that I surprise myself with out of the blue), strong improv ability, and lots of laughs along the way.

Safety
How Anthony McKinstry creates a safe table
A Safety & Consent Checklist will be available for you to fill out before the session zero begins and we will discuss (without specifically calling anyone out) the Lines & Veils of all participants during session zero. If session zero has occurred already, I will, on request, spend time with you to personally go over your Safety & Consent Checklist. X cards (for Lines) and N cards (for Veils) are available to all players during play by DM to me. Combat will be fast-paced and cinematic using a mix of Theater of the Mind and DnDBeyond Maps. Social encounters will be played out by me as if the character is speaking to yours and can be either roleplayed in return or described and rolled for, as desired.
