About the adventure
As the title would suggest, we're playing the Tyranny of Dragons adventure! This adventure takes us from little Level 1 baby adventurers all the way to Level 15! I love to not just do what's in the adventure book, but to also incorporate players' backstories, that way everyone can feel fulfilled and like their character had more motivation to adventure than just "this is what I do because I was made to do this." That's kind of how I play adventure and fantasy games, and I think it just brings a level of depth and connection to the table (pun definitely intended) than not playing that way. I like to feel connected to my character and the world that they grew up in as much as I can, so I want to provide that experience to my players as much as possible!

About me
Hi there! I'm Riley, and welcome to BriarHart RPG! I love D&D (specifically 5e) so much, and over the past 6 years or so, I've grown to love DM'ing as much as I love playing. I love watching chaos unfold as players make their plans and the dice either laugh in their face or make them into "basically gods," and I love that as a DM, I get to be both player and facilitator! I'm working on homebrewing my own world, but for now, all of my adventures will be pre-written adventures that I have access to in D&D Beyond (though I have been known to homebrew things to sprinkle in here and there, because improv and creativity are at least half the fun of a game!). I'm very much "rule of cool" where I feel I can be, and am all for players breaking the game with the "letter of the law," so to speak. I try to give each player their time to shine, and have adopted some interesting table rules over the past couple years thanks to getting to see all kinds of different DM styles. I use D&D Beyond, AboveVTT, and Discord, though VDO.Ninja is nice, too. (I may play around with Talespire or Arcane if the desire is there, but for now those are what I use!) All you need is Opera, Chrome, or Firefox (and, of course, Discord)!

Creating your character
Characters will start at Level 1. I always say to start with max possible health at Level 1 (so the highest number your hit die can roll + your Constitution modifier), and then we roll from there. If you ever roll a 1, of course please reroll that cursed die and consider putting it in dice jail! :P I also use the rolling system for stats, because I live for the chaos and randomness it brings. Of course, if you roll something way over- or under-powered, I'll allow for up to two rerolls, but whichever set you choose, you have to use the WHOLE set - not bits and pieces of all three. As far as backstories, origins, classes, etc. - I don't force players to reveal ANY details about their characters if they don't want to, because I love preventing metagaming at any and every possible level. If I wouldn't be able to tell it by looking at your character, you have no obligation to share it with your fellow adventurers right off the bat, as far as I'm concerned! I love for characters to actually get to know each other throughout an adventure, and players knowing what everyone's doing from the jump can unconsciously ruin that. Lastly, I definitely don't mind classes or species or feats being doubled up on, because everyone brings their own flavor and their own style to the table! (Obviously some feats don't allow for doubling up, such as Sentinel, but I'm still okay with multiple people having it, it just obviously won't be able to be used in certain circumstances because of how the feat works.)
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You'll definitely need a mic, but I won't require cameras at all. Just make sure to have the AboveVTT extension installed in either Chrome or Firefox! You can definitely come to Session 0 with absolutely nothing done, that's completely fine - that's part of what I use Session 0s for, because I know sometimes the technical stuff can be daunting.
What Riley Jean brings to the table
I'll be using AboveVTT for all the visuals, and if folks want music, we can either do a Spotify listening party (if Discord allows for us to do that while we're in voice chat; we can also use VDO.Ninja instead of Discord for voice chatting so that we can use Spotify in Discord), or I can finally figure out how to use the music feature in AboveVTT. :P I have access to a fair number of source books thanks to being in campaigns with folks that have TONS of sourcebooks available to THEM, and you'll of course have access to all the things you already have access to, so I'm sure we have a ton of stuff between us!

How Riley Jean creates a safe table
I like to do a Session 0 where we can all just chat and get to know each other, and we can discuss lines and veils that folks are comfortable discussing. I send the lines and veils sheet in a group setting, but of course allow/encourage folks to send it back to me individually to protect privacy and all that. Once the group is established, I'll send an invite to my TTRPG Discord where there will be a category specifically for the Start Playing group, and within that category there will be channels and threads that only I and each individual player can see, that way we can speak privately without having to go into DMs (I'm not a fan of DMs). I know my content warnings are a little broad/obvious, but I just don't know what else might come up without meeting the players and knowing what their lines and veils are! If at any point in the adventure I come across something prewritten that violates a line or veil, I'll either rewrite/rework it, or I'll speak with the player who has that line or veil and see how we can work around it.
