About the adventure

Yee haw! it's Monster of the Week: Wild West Style! Head back in time to a supernatural version of the Wild West as we reskin our Monster of the Week playbooks to fit Wild West tropes. Perhaps the Divine is now a God-touched preacher, the Wronged is a gunslinger with no name, the Monstrous is a Skinwalker. Let's see what happens when we take monster hunting to the Wild, Weird West! No experience necessary--learn as we play. Every game is different, so come for more than one!

About me

Hi! In addition to being a professional game master (both here on Start Playing Games and live-and-in-person), I'm a published short story horror author, and host of the horror-and-humor actual-play audio drama, The Gothic Podcast. I started gaming in the Way Back, beginning with the D&D Basic box set that I asked for for Christmas because I liked the dragon on the cover. And though I still love playing and running D&D (and its cousins, Pathfinder 1e & 2e), I have gleefully embraced many other systems, especially Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) games such as Monster of the Week. I also loves me some Ten Candles, City of Mist, Alien RPG, and many others. Oh, and Catthulhu! Meow...aaaarrrrrhhhhhhll! Character creation

Creating your character

Monster of the Week is a role-playing game based on the Powered By the Apocalypse game engine. It is rules-light with easy character creation based on 'playbooks' -- character archetypes. I'll have you pick out a playbook on Roll20 beforehand (one 'type' per player, so we won't have two Monstrous, or three Wronged) and then we'll finish character creation at the beginning of the session. But if you join the Discord (SEE Prep Materials), we can talk about how to reskin the playbook you've chosen to fit the Wild West aesthetic we're going for.

The current party

It's the Wild, Weird West and the Jackalope Tavern in the town of Judgment, New Mexico is hosting a once-in-a-lifetime show: the Clockwork Cabaret, a traveling circus that has set up their tents outside of town in the Armadillo desert. But what powers those marvelous gear-work creations? And does the Cabaret have anything to do with the citizens of Judgment who have recently gone missing? Time to re-skin those Monster of the Week Playbooks to fit an alternate 1800s American Wild West theme and then it'll be time to skin those smokewagons and fight to save the West from the monsters. Monster of the Week: Wild West Style is gritty horror with, possibly, just a bit of humor thrown in to soften the terror. Saddle up!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need a computer/phone/tablet/something and a decent mic for connecting to our Discord voice channel. And you'll need to logon to Roll20 before the game (SEE Prep Materials) to choose a Playbook and create a hunter. And that's about all you'll need.

What GM Mr Patrick brings to the table

I will bring the descriptions. Loads and loads of descriptions (though you'll have a chance at doing some of that, too), plus ambient music, imagery, and ... monsters. Lots and lots of monsters.

Safety

How GM Mr Patrick creates a safe table

This game will contain horror, gore, and mature themes not suitable for every gamer. That said, the GM likes to keep things PG-13 to Lovecraftian-horror R-Rated. We will also talk about, and use, gaming safety tools such as lines, veils, and the X Card.
