While D&D 5e is still the grandaddy of all RPG's, the quality of the content published by Wizards of the Coast has been sub-par the last few years. There are some great home-brewed games and worlds out there, which in my opinion is what keeps the game vibrant and relevant. Hopefully WotC gets back to its roots of providing good, quality material for its core fans. As it stands currently, it requires heavily home-brewed rules to even make the game approach the balance needed to allow for the challenging/rewarding experience that players want. I.e. it takes a LOT of work to make things work in the game. I tend to stick to updating old modules to current rules, which has made for some fun adventures. While I still have some love for the system, mostly due to its trailblazing for RPGs in general, it has lost its way, in my opinion.

Pathfinder is easily the most complete fantasy game TTRPG. Easy to learn and teach, it is a joy to GM. Meticulously play-tested, and with tons of free resources to be found on the internet for it, it is what all fantasy RPGs should aspire to. I compare it to new players from other systems like this: if RPGs were school, then Pathfinder is at the college level, while most other systems are still in the grade-school years. Pathfinder 2e is challenging and rewarding, its published content is well written and imaginative, Paizo is pro-gamer and pro-GM, and I am actually happy for the well-publicized scandals that pushed me to give it a try.

I have decided to update this review, as until now, I had only played one campaign with Roxas. As we started a new campaign, I have to say, I was already impressed with Roxas' ability with his voice acting. This was in "Curse of Strahd", which is tough, as there really is only one accent, with very few opportunities to branch past that particular accent. His variations on that accent were pretty damn good, though, and there was no confusing one NPC from another. After starting this new campaign (Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep) though, I am very impressed with his range of voices and accents, and his ability at Improv, to really bring a recognizable personality to each individual NPC. This might seem like a small thing, but when it comes to the ability of a DM to help his players immerse themselves into a gaming session, and encourage role-playing in a natural, organic way, this ability really is invaluable. Roxas has this in spades. The review below still stands: Roxas is a badass DM. The above "extended" review, comes after playing his sessions for almost a year, and as a DM here on StartPlaying myself (in no small part to Roxas' creative inspiration), I have to say that he is part of that rarified "gold standard" of GM's. Previous review: I decided to wait for several sessions before posting a review. From the very first session, I was deeply impressed. The patience, knowledge, creativity, and acting ability continues to impress me with each successive session. The amount of preparation Roxas has put into his sessions is incredible. From descriptive storytelling, voice acting, and setting an atmosphere with visuals and background music that easily suspends disbelief, it is easy to get lost in the RPG world he manages. I look forward to many sessions with this DM. Just shut up and take my money!
