“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

“Combat Lite” games typically focus less on combat encounters and more on roleplay, storytelling, and exploration. Combat tends to be shorter, less frequent, resolved in a more narrative style, or absent altogether, while keeping the story as the primary focus.

Josh

Hi! I've been playing TTRPGs on and off for almost a decade now. Below is what you might want to know about me.

– I prefer building and playing grounded characters
– I'm not one for number-crunching or min-maxing
– I've played in live, virtual, and play-by-post forms
– I've acted as GM more often than not, mostly out of necessity
– Most of my experience is in D&D 5e, which I am very, very much burnt out on
– I also own Fate Core, Break!!, .dungeon, and Blades in the Dark (and awaiting Legend in the Mist)
