Despite having played and DM'd D&D for 40 years this is my first experience playing an online game. Admittedly I didn't have high expectations, thinking this could not replace friends around a table top. Thankfully I was wrong. I am typically not a fan of pre-written material as well because It makes for a herded feel and usually does not allow much for character growth. Again, I was wrong. Heartlock made for a very welcome virtual table, when I wasn't familiar with the technology aspect of it he was patient and helpful. He is a very good story teller. 12 or so sessions in despite using a pre-written campaign I feel my character has been able to grow and explore without being herded. When I have done things clearly not counted on he has done well "off the cuff" without losing sight of the story There is a very good flow to the story as well, never a feeling of being stuck. We also have a non-traditional group of characters or dare I say misfits, with different goals and character beliefs and Heartlock has done well to play to all those aspects and keep a sense of balance in the story.
