I always look forward to my bi-weekly Call of Cthulhu gaming session with Robert Mullen and our cadre investigators, whose fate is invariably doomed. We all know the characters we play in Robert’s intricately designed scenarios will most likely die horrible or untimely deaths, or more likely go quite mad, the longer they are lucky(?) enough to stay alive. But that is the point of the game! And Robert consistently delivers rich, interesting content we all love to investigate and explore through role play. Robert Mullen strikes the right balance of a stern Keeper with just enough compassion and empathy for his players for them to want to continue our investigations into the Unnamable secrets of the Cthulhu Mythos. If the party starts to get off track, Robert judiciously and expertly weaves the ongoing narrative back to the main story, sometimes without anyone even noticing. Perhaps Robert is able to do this because he is so thorough in his research of the source material before even starting a campaign. In conjunction with his thoroughgoing storylines, Robert is also quite able to make adjustments to the narrative on the fly; he is prepared for whatever actions his sometimes chaotic players make. This is the mark of a truly dedicated and masterful Keeper in the realms of Call of Cthulhu. Should you choose to game with Robert, it helps to be prepared but even if you are not, he is quite flexible and willing to work with each player on a one-on-one level to make certain your gaming experience is intended just for you.
