About Venger Satanis

I go by Venger Satanis (VS for short). I've been involved in TTRPGs for about 40 years, usually GMing. In 2018, I started creating my own campaign setting where I could set the majority of adventures. It's called Cha'alt, and is still going strong. The aesthetic-keys of Cha'alt are eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, post-apocalypse, humor, sleaze, pop-culture, and grindhouse exploitation.

I started running games because...

It's the most interesting and enjoyable form of creative expression I've found.

My favorite books are

I like H.P. Lovecraft, Thomas Ligotti, R.A. Salvatore, Dune, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Nietzsche, and P.D. Ouspensky.

My favorite shows/movies are

Some of my favorite shows: The Twilight Zone, Doctor Who (vintage), Lost, Community, and How I Met Your Mother. Favorite movies: Star Wars trilogy, Dune (original), The Beastmaster, Bladerunner, Conan the Barbarian & Destroyer, Heavy Metal, Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, Dodgeball, and Waiting...

How Venger Satanis runs games

What I prefer is rules-light, open world, rule of cool, story now, and immersive roleplaying experience. On Roll20, my games are text-only and 18+ for possible mature content. My own home-brewed system of Advanced Crimson Dragon Slayer is basically an OSR version of 5th edition D&D. When running 5e, I typically run it like an old-school or OSR game.

I prep by

Attuning myself to the game world within the campaign setting.

My favorite trope is...

Never give up.

My games focus on...

Adventure.

Venger Satanis's ideal table

High trust (eventually, after we get to know each other), Living World and Living Story, and immersive vibe (but immersion, for me, does not mean number crunching, railroading, or standardized beige-fantasy).

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

gonzo

I love it when a player

Adds a little flourish of worldbuilding when describing their character and what they're doing.

I think min/maxing...

I don't use numbers like that, so there's very little opportunity for min/maxing at my table.
