About Gianluca - The Italian DM

Hello everyone! I'm Gianluca, a computer engineer with the passion for GMing and tabletop games. I'm 32, and I live in Turin, Italy. I've been a tabletop games player since I was a kid, and I started GMing when I was in high school and after a long stop due to my studies and work, I started again with and never stopped since then. My favourite system is D&D in which I GM both pre-made campaign and story that I write myself. I have experiences also with other system, but only as a player. I like to explore and discover the story of my players, to create a wonderful tale to tell togheter!

I became a GM because

after a long break from TTRPG I've found some colleagues that always talked to me about trying to play Dungeons and Dragons, but really didn't know how or where to start. So I've decided to take back my old DM screen, my sketchbook and my dice and let them have the play of their life!

My favorite system of all Time is

Dungeons and Dragons! I've tried some different systems, but (maybe also for nostalgia) I always come back to D&D. It's the system that started me as a player, and it's the one that turned me into a GM. I love it, and I love how it makes everything feel possible, despite the flaws that it has.

When I'm not running games I'm...

playing a lot of video games, reading books and comic books, and watching anime/series. I'm also interested in listening to podcast about TTRPG and watching videos to always improve my GM abilities, or simply to learn new stories to take inspiration from. Of course I'm also working as an engineer.

How Gianluca - The Italian DM runs games

As a GM, I like both to play pre-written campaing (Curse of Strahd is my favourite one) and stories that I write myself. I've actually written a not published campaign called "Myrkul's Awakening" from PC to level 1 to level 10. In my games I love to work on the social dynamics that are built among the party, and put the players against strong moral dilemmas. During my games you can expect great focus on exploration and investigation, roleplaying with NPC, and some combat of course! I also love to play with newcomers, and to teach them the basis of the game. I hope we're gonna play togheter soon!

My games focus on...

exploration and investigation. I usually use big cities and misteries in my games. I love to see players that try to solve a big mistery and interact with NPC creating plot that we will explore togheter. Sometimes this interaction, or exploring areas that you should not, lead to ferocious encounters

Rules are...

the spine of the system, but they aren't unbreakable. If I feel that in a specific situation, a player is doing something not properly following the rules, but the player it's so into the action or interpretation, I won't mind too much. Fun and enjoyment comes first for me.

When it comes to voices

I usually don't do them. At my table anyone can do as they like. If you feel comfortable making a funny voice for your character do it. If you want to speak in your normal voice, no problem. I usually tend to change some accent, or the intonation, but I'm not good at changing voices.

Gianluca - The Italian DM's ideal table

My table it's usually formed by people who want to enjoy a classical hero's story. You meet with other adventurers and go on a journey to do something good. Save someone, retrieve your inheritance, defeat the big bad evil guy. I also like moral dilemma, in which the goodness of the character is often put to the test. So, if this themes makes your senses tickles, feel free to book a seat!

I love it when a player

have an interesting backstory that I can use to develope unique quests tailored for him. Developing a character it's something that as a DM I enjoy very much. So when players come to my table, with an idea of the past of their characters it's always a joy for me!

I think metagaming...

it's something that when abused can ruin a game, or even a party. Metagaming it's something that I allow very rarely. It breaks immersion, and in my experience it's something that can even create hatred between players. It's ok doing metagaming discussing strategies, but I don't like it at my table

I think min/maxing...

it's not suitable for my tables. I prioritize having fun and creating unique stories. I don't mind if you can kill my monsters in one turn, if doing so you're ruining the experience for other players. We are here to have fun togheter, not to show who is the strongest of the table.
