About Marik the Dragon Queen

I've been playing D&D 5e for about 9 years now! Professionally, I am a content editor for some mobile apps and games, and I organize and do social media / marketing for D&D Adventurers League events as well. DM-ing gives me a lot of creative freedom to tell stories, and that's my priority when it comes to the games that I run. I am also a Gold ENnie-award winning adventure writer! My focus is usually on character development and character-driven narratives. I like stories that have dramatic revelations and can show much a character can change from the beginning to the end, and I love delving deep and helping players develop their characters' stories from their origins to their endgame. When I run hardcover adventures, I usually tweak the story to better fit the characters playing. I also add little touches to one-shots so players can be more invested in the story, even if it's just for a session! I also like including lore for those who are interested in the particular setting of the game. If you're looking to hire me to run something, I can craft a specific sort of adventure for you! Just let me know what setting you're interested in and what kind of adventure you're looking for! You can also pick the starting level and the kind of narrative you're after. One thing to note is that I absolutely love epic level games. Games for tier 3 and tier 4 are few and far between, but I'm not afraid to take a campaign to those levels and beyond. This doesn't mean that I dislike lower and starting levels, but if you're looking for epic level games, then please consider adventuring with me! You can also find me running games for Baldman Games' Virtual D&D WeekendS!

organzing D&D events. My life kinda revolves around D&D tbh.

How Marik the Dragon Queen runs games

Here are some notes about how I am as a DM: ⚔️ I am a narrative-heavy DM who focuses a lot on storytelling, ambiance, and interactions between players and NPCs. ⚔️ I like incorporating character backstories to make things more relevant for the players and to keep them engaged. ⚔️ I try my best to challenge players with combat encounters that aren't a slog and have interesting mechanics. ⚔️ I make sure that everyone is doing something and that every player gets to participate.

My games focus on...

Narrative. I'm more than willing to bend rules and mechanics to better suit the story. (Oh, and visuals and immersion, because I find a lot of joy in looking for the right concept art, choosing the perfect background music, or drawing my own maps when I can.)

Rules are...

important, but sometimes they can get in the way of the story. I'm willing to bend (or even break) a few rules if it will fit better into the story we're creating.

When it comes to voices

I really try my best to give NPCs different voices and tones (maybe accents, if I can) to give them more personality.

Marik the Dragon Queen's ideal table

I like tables with a lot of energy: talkative and reactive players, side comments, very loud. I also enjoy players working with me to get what they want out of the campaign for their characters (a specific arc or goal they want to reach, for example.)

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Lifelike NPCs, ambience, visuals, character-focus, the occasional ridiculous homebrew monster

I love it when a player

is very invested in their character. I often say that the more a player gives me in regards to their story, the more I can give them in return in terms of their arc or character development.

My perfect party mix is

when the synergy is great with all the players. Doesn't have to be super balanced mechanically, it's just nice to see the team work as a single unit when in combat, for example.
