About Ash

Hello! My name is Ash, and I have been running and playing in D&D5e games for 10+ years. I learned the system by GMing originally, and have taught dozens of new players how to create a character, fill out their sheets, and play through the basic and advanced rules of the game. I have experience running both single-session and long-term campaigns. I have completed a handful of games that have lasted years on end, and I currently organize and lead a group of 8 players through a long-term campaign that, at the time of writing, has been running every week for 2 years straight. I also host a medium-sized Discord server, where people can find groups to play with. I always value respect and humility in all of my groups. Taking feedback and using it to become better is at the core of my GMing style. I believe that fun, agency, and companionship are held above all else when playing TTRPGs. I also believe that setting guidelines and boundaries prior to playing is of great importance, to ensure that everyone feels comfortable moving forward.

I got started GMing...

when I was 12. I learned how to play by GMing for a group of 5 people who were a generation older than me. I've gathered skills through my experience of over a decade that allow me to respond quickly to the unexpected and pop right back up when I get knocked down.

When I'm not running games I'm...

adding lore to every world I've ever created, fine-tuning homebrew systems and classes that I've been working on for years, imagining how stories and experiences would play out in every glorious way. I love being creative, and I have a plethora of outlets to express myself with.

How Ash runs games

I love teaching new players all that I can about the game! I will always take steps to help members of my groups create their characters, fill in their sheets, and make everything uniquely theirs! Before playing with a group, it's important to get together and go over what everyone is comfortable with, expecting, or does not want to see during the course of the campaign. This includes setting forward any house rules I might implement, as well as my own boundaries and expectations. I also like to have 1-on-1 interactions with my players during this time, so that I can clear up any questions or concerns that they might have, and help them understand the setting of the campaign. Rules are there for a reason, but I will always value fun and creativity over number-crunching. If my players are having fun, I am. And that is what lies at the heart of the game. I'm not afraid to create new house rules to ensure that everyone at the table is enjoying themselves. I enjoy roleplaying immensely, but I understand that it is not for everyone! I always try to encourage players to go outside of their comfort zone and find something that works for them, even if that is as simple as changing the pitch of their voice. Despite this, I know that there is a comfort in playing what you are used to, and I strive to maintain that comfort throughout the game.

Rules are...

there for a reason, but they are ultimately guidelines to facilitate the mechanics of the game. Rules always take second place if they are competing with the party enjoying themselves.

When it comes to voices

I absolutely love them! I try to give each character their own unique personality and voice. Of course, I'm only human, so I mix things up or I duplicate voices sometimes. Voices aren't for everyone, so it will never be a requirement in my games to change yours at all!

Ash's ideal table

If you enjoy being fully immersed in a sandbox fantasy world, battling foes with a party of your comrades, taking down evil at the roots, and connecting with PCs and NPCs alike throughout the story, my table is for you! If you enjoy a story as straight as a railroad, betraying your fellow party members, playing straight-up evil characters, and only partaking in combat, you might be better suited looking somewhere else. I run a lot of fantasy games, from low magic to high magic, from cozy to grimdark (but that's not to say I won't run a sci-fi, space-faring game or two)! My games often feature an entire world for the players to explore and travel through, full of life and color, and they have a decently even mix of combat, shopping, and roleplay sessions.

I think it's a red flag when players...

players are only invested during their turn in combat. I host ROLEPLAYING games, so there is bound to be quite a bit of roleplaying. I have combat sessions and dungeon-crawls, too, but you should expect to interact with NPCs and player characters throughout my games.

I think metagaming...

is unavoidable, but should be kept to a minimum. I understand letting something slip every now and again, but I find that it spoils the immersion and mystery at a certain point.
