About Shandor
I'm a music teacher, currently between jobs. Been playing DND since 2020, and DMing since 2022. I've completed multiple long running campaigns as both a DM and a player. Most of my experience is with homebrew campaigns, be it homebrew DND settings, or more anime inspired campaigns such as One Piece or MHA. I do Rule of Cool, rolled stats (with some mercy if you roll bad), and have plenty of homebrew rules that generally favor the player and quality of life (such as bonus action potions).

I became a GM because
I wanted to be in a One Piece game, but all the random roll20 ones I got into were really bad for one reason or another, and I thought "I can do better than that". Ended up running a 2+ year long campaign from level 1-20 as my first campaign I dm'ed.
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
Witty, friendly, wholesome
How Shandor runs games
I am very rule of cool, we're here to have fun, and the rules are there to guide us on how to make cool stuff happen, not to restrict us. My games are typically a good mix of RP and combat, 60/40. I do voices for all my characters and NPCs, I typically also run a Watch2Gether for music during game. For combats, I run a mix of easier fights to make the players feel cool and powerful, and much more difficult fights that require the whole party to work together to face a hard boss. To this end, I give players max HP on level-ups, that way I don't have to worry about accidentally killing you on a crit at low levels, and I can throw bigger cooler stuff at you. I'm always on the players' side, I want you guys to win and look cool, I just also happen to be playing the baddies (but I'm also your allies).

I once ran a session...
having woken up ten minutes beforehand without prep. Not my finest moment, but with the power of improv, and recurring characters, the players had no idea, and thought I'd had everything plotted out the whole time. Most still do. *sweats*
Rules are...
guidelines on how to do really cool shit. Not everything a player or DM wants to do will have a specified mechanical way to do it, and sometimes those mechanics are really restrictive, or just bad (see grappling in 5e). The rules are there to let us do cool stuff in a cohesive way, not restrict us.
When it comes to voices
I like to do voices for all of my characters. I have been told I'm pretty good at it *pats self on back*. It makes each character more unique and endearing, and easier to tell apart. Plus it's just fun for me. But each player can do voices or not, I don't care.
Shandor's ideal table
My games are generally 60/40 RP to combat. Sometimes we'll go multiple sessions in a row of no combat, then multiple sessions in a row of just combat, depending on how things in the story shake out. I also typically swing back and forth between whimsical and comedic to serious scenes. I don't typically keep my games serious 24/7, and like to have lighthearted slice of life and comedic elements to break up the serious moments. I often have out of character jokes at my table, and we'll occasionally go on tangents outside of game, before roping ourselves back into the session.

I love it when a player
goes out of their way to RP with the other PCs and NPCs about things that aren't necessarily plot relevant stuff. It gives a good opportunity for character building and worldbuilding, and it's what we're all here for.
I think it's a red flag when players...
start to make their own homebrew without asking me first. As the DM, I'll have final say on it all. If you wanna create a super move, cool, come up with the flavor and basic idea, and I'll make the mechanics. Making it yourself gets you attached, and disappointed when I make changes.
I think min/maxing...
has a time and a place. If everyone at the table wants to min-max and have really strong characters, then cool. I'll make strong enemies and we'll run a high power campaign. If one player is running a super strong min max build, and everyone else isn't, it won't be as fun for anyone.
