I prep by
Having internal monologues, thinking about plots and planning out elaborate worlds. Then letting my players loose onto it. Depends on the campaign honestly. Oneshots are more railroaded because of the limited time. Campaigns can be almost any way based on what the players like.
Rules are...
great! They give you a framework to work with. But they are guidelines on how to generally follow in spirit. Sometimes you gotta follow what would make the experience more enjoyable or potentially have more stakes.
Riley's ideal table
I like to run games for a group of friends or future friends. I like to prioritize Teamwork and Collaboration. Mutual Respect is Non-Negotiable Love Sharing the Spotlight. We value an equal balance between combat and roleplaying. Players who are happy to step back and let another player take the lead during a tense negotiation or a crucial moment in combat keep the pacing dynamic and fun for everyone. I want to be a fan of each of the Player characters, to find the best in each of them and watch them shine in their stories.
