About Randall Harper

I've been a Stars Without Number DM since 2017. I've run several campaigns using my homebrew lore and setting using this ruleset. I think my world is immersive and expansive enough to bring joy to others besides my friend group. I will guide new players and give veterans something they haven't experienced before. I have my roots in D&D 5e but I opted for SWN because it has nearly perfect rules for science fiction gameplay. I can help player a transition from other rulesets and worlds to mine. My goal is to bring joy and a little trauma to my players. I want my players to be badass, to feel scared but to punch fear in the face.

I got started GMing...

Because I wanted to share a world with my friends. With my friends, that world grew and grew until it became a galaxy. I hope to continue that trend and keep adding to the story with new perspectives and people. Collaboration is why I GM - it's important to share with and learn from others.

My favorite books are

The Forever War Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors The Expanse series The Lord of the Rings trilogy Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Project Hail Mary

How Randall Harper runs games

I like epic campaigns that have an open world element. There's some whimsy but plenty of darkness. I shroud some things in mystery but won't hide the plot or lore from you. My players will never be railroaded. If you find something more interesting than the main plot then so be it- we will explore it together. Combat can be tactical but I also follow "rule of cool" when appropriate. Battles are not going to be every session but when one occurs, it'll matter and it'll be brutal. I really enjoy character development and roleplay - so much so that I've been known to have side sessions between main sessions with players who wanted to do more with their characters. And if that's not for you, that's fine too. I work with the player to engage them whether they like to roleplay, hack, build stuff, run a business, or more than likely some combination of it all. My purpose is to engage and entertain. If I am not doing that, I have failed. I'm always open to criticism and self-improvement so don't be afraid to rip me if you don't enjoy something. I hope to see you soon!

I deal with rules issues by...

I will not argue but rather listen and understand what is causing the disagreement. From there, I will make a ruling based on all available information while trying to be fair and also keeping the game flowing

I once ran a session...

My players were tasked with assassinating "Anton Wo", a very charismatic politician who was leading a powerful faction. So long story short, they rammed a starship into his tower and the warp core detonated, which "accidentally" destroyed the entire city. Oops.

My games focus on...

Science fiction and explore themes of politics and science while also allowing for character development and cool combat scenarios.

Randall Harper's ideal table

I like players who don't metagamed, who are actively roleplaying, and don't try to min-max too much. I want the player to be creative but also take things seriously. Don't worry about party comp - I will make sure any group has fun. I use "Map of the Mind" in addition to actual maps so be prepared to use your imagination!

I am for a vibe that's...

Chill yet focused and energetic. I want to feel good energy from the table as much as I want to emanate it. If the vibes are good, the session will be good!

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Science Fiction! I am a rare breed - science fiction is my bread and butter. I borrow/honor all sorts ideas and concepts and make references to other media. We stand on the shoulders of giants, after all.

I think metagaming...

Is bad and should be avoided when possible. However, I also understand sometimes it needs to exist for some things like explaining player absences or a good joke. Just try not to do it while in combat or something where your character should be actively engaged.
