About Overlord Onyx - Jon

Hello there! I’m Jon, your friendly ADHD goblin. I’ve been DMing for somewhere around 10 or 11 years now. I’ve had interests in D&D for about 18, and a captivation for storytelling and fantasy for as long as I can remember. R Salvatore, Tom Clancy, Weis & Hickman, Robert Jordan, and others guided my childhood and filled me with an imagination that crafts worlds I wish to share with others. I’ve run, played in, and experimented with a variety of TTRPG systems over there years, such as: D&D 5e, Numenara, Legend of the 5 Rings, Shadowrun 5e/6e, Call of Cthulhu, Pathfinder, Starfinder, Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40k, WH40 Dark Heresy, Godbound… I’ve probably missed a few. As a DM I enjoy and encourage creativity, interesting problem-solving, and changing up the stereotypes. I am a pretty player forward DM, but I have no qualms about throwing a challenge at my players or making them think twice about going somewhere they shouldn’t! I am part of TTRPG group called the Game Master's Circle. Come find us at https://discord.gg/BUzzvRcUJF and join our community! We play TTRPGs, we game, and enjoy our community of like minded individuals.

I got started GMing...

Honestly? Because I had several friends who were really wanting to try some TTRPGs out... But no one wanted to be 'that guy' and take charge. I was my groups papa bear figure and literally everyone looked and me and were like "So when are we starting?" And that became that, I became the forever DM!

People are always surprised when I tell them

That I have created my own homebrew world, with it's own whole pantheon, created from scratch (Albeit a lot of inspiration!), with far, far too many details that has consumed around 7-8 years of my life. They are also surprised when I tell them it isn't ready to run anything in it yet. Oops!

When I'm not running games I'm...

Usually doing other nerdy hobbies. I play Magic the Gathering, I game, I am working on Warhammer 40k models, Kingdom Death: Monster, or simply getting my kiddos into my same hobbies.

How Overlord Onyx - Jon runs games

I enjoy roleplay heavy as much as combat heavy sessions. I tend to lean into the rules as they are written and intended, BUT if a player can sell me an idea that bends them, I am always up for seeing a player in action. I have a knack for voices from time to time if the mood arises. D&D 5e: I don’t do much outside homebrew in my sessions, but I do have a smaller variety of my own that I allow after having worked out some balancing. I allow the use of Kobold Press Deep Magic and Heroes Handbook with fluff modifications to fit into my world as well as few other published third party material. Let me know if you are interested and I’ll happily show you what I have!

I once ran a session...

Of call of Cthulhu where I let a player choose their own background rather than the premade. Lawyer. He then proceeded to find a use for the skills, succeed on it, and survive a Sahagun attack along with the party! Only to break his leg jumping off a room. They still managed to survive and escape.

I prep by

Sitting down and pouring my everything into my ideas either weeks in advance or the night before session. It just... Happens. And I work my best under pressure or with absolutely zero pressure at all. ADHD problems I suppose.

Rules are...

The baseline and structure. Once you have the frame down, you can build whatever you want on top of it. If everyone is following them, it is easy to meet everyone at a standard point and allow changes, deviations, and a bit of 'rule of cool' to make things more unique. Rules lawyer until I am not!

Overlord Onyx - Jon's ideal table

I run a pretty Player Friendly table, for the most part. My ideal table is simply one where everyone gets along, and understands that the goal is for everyone to have fun, have their moment in the spotlight, and that we are writing this story together. I tend to run pretty by the book as a base rule for myself, but from there, I am willing to allow players a solid amount of freedom to attempt or sell most reasonable things. Players who show up on time (Within reason), are respectful of others and the DM, take the game seriously, are creative, and wish to enjoy a story are always welcome at my tables. We laugh when we can, get serious when we have to, and take each situation in stride the rest of the time!

I love it when a player

Can sell me on an idea. Not just come up with something outlandish. When the come up with something that sounds plausible, that had real thoughts, plans, and ideas behind it. Something that makes me do more than just say "Oh you can try that' it makes me want them to succeed.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Players who always say 'that's what my character would do!' when it literally doesn't make sense. You still have to FIT into the tale being told, so creating a narrative that conflicts with the tale by deliberate choice... Doesn't ever sit well with me. Have fun, but make sure everyone does.

I think metagaming...

Can be reasonable at times. I don't like when people do it to plan or prepare outside of the table, or use it to upend something. But players cooperating at the table, using reasonable, fair things, or reminders? Absolutely ok in my book! This is a group tale, the party deserves to be a part of it!
