About me
I discovered my mother's 1st edition D&D set in middle school. I immediately built and ran my own custom dungeon. It flopped after the first session ("my mom says I can't play because it's demonic") but I've been hooked ever since. I started a homebrew Pathfinder campaign more than 10 years ago, in which the rulers are magic-hoarders called Spellmisers. It's still going strong. I've completed several D&D 5e and Pathfinder campaigns, played and occasionally co-ran a homebrew Ars Magica world, and chased a Band of Blades group all the way to Skydagger Keep. I even tried to run a Wheel of Time campaign once (I don't recommend it, alas). My players keep telling me I'm the best GM they've ever had. This is your chance to find out why!
GM Style
I live at the intersection of Fun Street, Optimization Avenue, and Good Storytelling Way. I set fiercely challenging obstacles and I place the tools to overcome them within your grasp. I want to see you use them; I want to see you triumph. But live or die, sink or swim, I make sure we enjoy a damn good story along the way. I believe that purely mechanical optimizing should not impede the creation of a fun and unique character. I like to experiment with house rules that more closely align the goals of making a character interesting and making a character powerful. I also try to weave a character's backstory and theme, developed by you, into the plot and the mechanics of play. If you have a character concept but "the numbers just aren't there," let me know; there might be a way to make it work.

Knows the Rules
An over a year long campaign of Band of Blades was one of the prime experiences of 2023. Joe is very welcoming, friendly and understanding GM, when it comes to rules (which might get finicky sometimes, as far as Forged in the Dark games goes) — he's extremely helpful and patient. I really enjoyed his ideas in world building, there's been quite a few things that differed from the book, unique scenarios originally written by him, and i think it fit nicely in the campaign and was extremely fun for the whole group. One more thing i must commend is his timing: games were perfect length, pre-mission prep never seemed to be the problem for pacing of the game, and if scenario was too big for one session, a climatic moment always had an interesting twist or well-deserved downtime followed by "to be continued" that felt more than appropriate. Scenes never dragged for too long and Joe never hesitated to move story forward when it's needed.
Joe is an incredible GM who excels at making fascinating worlds and making them feel very much alive around his players, watching the stones his players throw in the pond and adding in the ripples that make a world feel lived in. I think his best feature is rewarding player initiative and creativity. In our most recent Band of Blades campaign I spent many sessions as the spymaster weakening an enemy Broken's command staff and antagonizing them to lure them into a trap and Joe worked with me when the ideas seemed plausible, even though I'm pretty sure you're not *REALLY* supposed to be able to perma-kill Broken. Every session is super fun and I'm always looking forward to the next.
