About Nevik The Storyteller

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ I knew I was a Storyteller when, as a child, I wrote Lord of the Rings fan-fiction not about burly knights slaughtering filthy orcses, but instead about the outlawing of ring forging after the 3rd Age and the post-war trauma of the War of the Ring stirring paranoia about the return of Morgoth. Unfortunately for them, their fears happened to be the perfect fuel for the first campaign I ever ran. ╬ Δ ╬ I am Nevik The Storyteller, an avatar of creation and a purveyor of nuance. Strung along by an Eldritch muse, gifted with divination unto a myriad of untold tales, I strive to embody the spirit of this inspiration and uplift others with the cathartic heartbeat of awe that flows through my very own veins. For a mere pittance of coin, so too shall you share a place within our grand expedition of this tapestry of worlds!

How Nevik The Storyteller runs games

I have gathered lessons and inspirations from across the internet, building my methodology and philosophy from the teachings of Brennan Lee Mulligan (Adventuring Academy), Matthew Colville, Matt Mercer, Antonio Demico (Pointy Hat), Guy Sclanders (How To Be A Great GM), Janet Forbes and Dimitris Havlidis (World Anvil), Jed Herne, Brandon Sanderson, Henry Boseley (The Closer Look), Wrestling With Words, JD Schnee, John Matthew (Bookfox), Generation Tech, Marie Mullany (Just In Time Worlds), Tim Hickson (Hello Future Me), LocalScriptMan, The Fantasy Forge, Kyle Latino (Map Crow), Tale Foundry, Daði (Mystic Arts), and many more. I was essentially raised on TTRPGs, creating and running campaigns and systems from scratch constantly for my friends since childhood, spanning hundreds of sessions. Through this, I have gained a plethora of experience in managing and mediating groups of various sizes through hilarity and drama alike, and have developed a keen sense for narrative and mechanical opportunity. -- 🧙🧭 Role: I am a Storyteller first and foremost, and will design experiences around what makes for the most intriguing journey. I will work alongside players as a friend, a guide, not an antagonist. I am a guardian of a player's freedom of choice, and make it a rule to never want nor need to intervene in the path taken in any given adventure. -- 🧝🏽🏳️‍🌈 Inclusivity: You are worthy of respect and a space reserved from judgement and expectation. You are deserving of personal identity and freedom of expression. Show the same adherence toward others, and you have a place at my table. -- 🤼🎭 Party Cohesion: As players from across the realms bring with them a plethora of preferences and limits unique to each and every one, communication is a key part of fostering the right environment for every participant. I am always positively receptive to questions or requests, and will help players with whatever is needed along the way. -- 🎧📚 Immersion: I am a major proponent for the use of audio and visuals in my games that inspire the theater of the mind, to the extent that I make many of my own assets for use in-game. I will spin a web of ambience and song, portrait and plane, until the worlds blend together! So too do I attempt to perfect user experience to eliminate as much complication or technical turmoil as possible, ensuring a smooth transition into the realms beyond. -- 🧠🌟 Real-World Benefit: I believe that engaging in tabletop roleplaying scenarios has a strong ability to benefit life outside of the game. Stories, after all, were created as the first tool of learning and improvement, encapsulating the ability to simulate struggle, failure and triumph outside the realms of danger for which to hone one's mind for the future. Not only does collaborative storytelling improve mental health, but also specifically trains participants in the interpersonal skills of communication, teamwork, improvisation, trust, empathy, and resilience in the face of hindrance and doom. Understanding this, I lean into these elements of constant improvement, providing the players a gym of revelations to last a lifetime.

I once ran a session...

...for 14 hours straight with no breaks. We were defending a village near and dear to our hearts and refused to stop until either the village was safe or we dropped dead! We compromised with a bit of both. I have since adopted healthier game-running practices.

My games focus on...

The heartbeat beneath the exertion. The candle held aloft in the dark. At the center of all struggle is the birthplace of evolution, of a reason to chase that precious continuance. In focusing upon the intimacy of shared strife, a warmth is tapped with which to stave off the cold of the soul.

Rules are...

Consequence. They are the language of boundary, the essence of entwined restrictions from which to navigate within. As both an art and a science, rules and guidelines are the threads which coordinate us for better or worse, thus I find a semblance of beauty in both their creation and their reform.

Nevik The Storyteller's ideal table

Assembling a table is a delicate matter! I tend to experience my players like instruments churning out a shared song, where each instrument must be tuned to play well together and be given their place in the song to shine. When these align, the symphony is immaculate.

I am for a vibe that's...

Like a campfire. Close within its embrace is sheltering and warm, staving off the dark and the cold. So too do I imagine the party, a bubble filled with friendship and emotion and hope fending off against the danger and horror that would pop it.

I love it when a player

Expresses themselves! Whether providing feedback on the game, contributing to the collaborative story, or giving respect and gratitude to others doing the same, I aspire to draw out the aspects of our most lively selves.

My perfect party mix is

One which allows the players to maximize the stories of their characters. For example I don't want a player to play a priest because "the party needs a healer," I want them to pick a priest because their character is a vampire attempting to find their way back to sanctity even though it burns them.
