About Nalgrim
I'm a Game Master from Minnesota who has been playing tabletop RPGs since 2018 and running games since 2022. My experience ranges from one-shots to long-form campaigns, including a homebrew campaign that ran for over four years with a regular group. I've run games for both first-time players and experienced veterans, and I enjoy helping groups create memorable stories together. My games tend to focus on epic fantasy adventures with political intrigue, exploration, and character exploration. While I prepare a strong narrative framework, I believe the best stories come from player choices, I leave plenty of room for improvisation and adapting to the decisions the party (and the dice) make. My typical balance is approximately 40% roleplay, 30% combat, and 30% exploration - adjusting that balance depending on the party. I primarily run Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition and have experience with the 2024 revision. My games typically use Discord, D&D Beyond, and virtual tabletops such as Foundry VTT with battle maps and visual aids. Players who enjoy collaborative storytelling, engaging with other characters, and exploring rich fantasy worlds tend to thrive at my table. My goal is simple: create an entertaining, welcoming experience where everyone can participate in building a story worth remembering.

I became a GM because
I wanted to give my forever DM an opportunity to play. It just so happened that several of my friends were looking to learn how to play so I put together an adventure we ran for several years.
My favorite books are
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, To Reign in Hell by Steven Brust, and Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind.
People are always surprised when I tell them
that I started my career in the theater directing and designing sets and lights, but then transitioned to the earth sciences where I focus on geologic mapping and geologic map database design.
How Nalgrim runs games
As a GM, I enjoy creating reactive worlds where player actions matter, and the world continues to advance outside the immediate scenes. I particularly enjoy working with complex, emotionally driven characters and helping players develop personal story arcs that become part of the larger narrative. Whether you're an experienced roleplayer or completely new to the hobby, I strive to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable contributing to the story.

I deal with rules issues by...
making the decision that best moves the scene forward. Longer discussions with the players then follow making sure that the table is enjoying the game.
Rules are...
important - as long as they do not get in the way of a great game. They give us a common expectation, and keep things fair.
When it comes to voices
they can be fun, but aren't a necessary part of the game. While I like to make use of them occasionally, they are more for minor flavor than driving the adventure.
