About Mr. Tan the Magishen
Yo yo yo! WELCOME! You ready to play some DnD? I am Mr. Tan. I am a science teacher, street dancer, anime/dongua/video game enjoyer, and, most importantly, the GM of your next adventure! My first introduction to the world of TTRPGs was through my gaming buddies in 2019. I was fascinated by the fantastical stories, decision making dilemmas, and freedom of creativity that TTRPGs had to offer. When I finally revealed to my students that I played D&D, they immediately requested that I be their GM and run games for them. Inspired by their fervor, I picked up my proverbial wizard hat, learned the magic of running TTRPG games, and eventually became the forever GM for my students and friends. I have been running one-shots, short campaigns, and long campaigns for both kids and adults for the past 4 years. And I love every bit of it! I love running whimsical sword and sorcery adventures that are grounded in a hard magic system and world, which have been woven together using my Chinese cultural background, the diverse cultures of my students and friends, RPG video games, and my experience as a science educator. At my table, I value respect and active participation. I love to see every player freely and openly explore the story and its world, characters, and, most importantly, the character arcs! My table is open to all, especially my Black, brown, LGBTQA+, neuro-spicy, and disabled Players.

How Mr. Tan the Magishen runs games
Roleplay: RP heavy, comedic I love Roleplaying! I do my best to give personality and drive to my NPCs. I am also a goof-ball and love it when roleplaying scenes become comedic. Nevertheless, when the scary BBEG enters the story or a serious character arc moment emerges, you bet I will set the scene and mood. Temper your expectations with npcs voices though (I'll try my best but I'm not a voice actor). Combat: Tactical This depends on the campaign I am running and player consensus. For beginner players, I will run combat with a more guided approach and ease newbies into learning the combat mechanics and get comfortable with how I run combat. Once players become more experienced (or have previous experience), I mostly run my combat encounters with RaW while implementing a few homebrew rules to help facilitate player cooperation during combat. For my mini-boss and BBEG fights, I will also use the multi-initiative variant rule, where a boss creature gets to go multiple times at set initiatives during a round. Min/maxing is encouraged because I do my best to make sure these boss fights are legit BOSS fights. As a fellow RPG gamer and anime/donghua enjoyer, I believe that a great story can only be experienced by overcoming a great challenge. Rules: Rule of Cool Although my combat encounters are mechanically strict, I do follow the rule of cool for creative RP moments, especially when it would better serve the development of character arcs and/or creatively drive the story forward. World Building Over the years, I've created a canon world for all of my campaigns using inspirations and ideas from my players, my students, my friends, and my culture. The nations, cities, factions, religions, and people are all interconnected. I love it when players dive deep into the lore that I've crafted and add onto it when they build their characters and backstories. Many of my recurring NPCs are beloved PCs and characters made by my students and friends. Adult Content: I am okay with romance and fade-to-black. I am not okay with SA and similar content. Please refer to RPG Consent List document. I expect my games to be a respectful and safe environment for everyone so that we can all have fun.

I deal with rules issues by...
listening to feedback of all players at the table, reflecting on what would be fun AND fair, and then making a call to resolve the issue on my authority as the GM. I am open to bending the rules occasionally for actions that would be important for character development.
My favorite trope is...
The merry band of misfits goes on what seems to be a straightforward quest, only to find themselves getting caught up in a series of unfortunate (but hilarious) events, unraveling the lore of the land/world and staring face to face with the cosmic horror behind it all. And now they must kill god.
Mr. Tan the Magishen's ideal table
I really enjoy a goofy but engaged table who ain’t afraid to have their PCs take risks, roll with the consequences, and actively try their best to drive the story forward with each other creatively. I also love my Players who seek to develop their character’s motives and values, and push the PCs to build interesting, meaningful connections with NPCs and each other, and enjoy being apart the fantastical world I’ve crafted.

I love it when a player
rolls a nat 1 and fully commit to role playing their character through the failure for the dramatics (and funnies). goes after story beats, narrative conflicts, and character development rather than playing it safe.
I think min/maxing...
is needed for combat but should be placed in the back burner when the opportunity for great RP presents itself.
