About MikeTheDM

I have been playing Dungeons & Dragons since 2017 and have been a Dungeon Master since 2019. Most of that time has been spent running modules, one shots, and adaptations of old CRPGS. I am a big fan of RAW. Your spells and abilities will work as per their description, but that doesn't mean I won't let you try to use them creatively. Worst that could happen is I say "Sorry..." I am also really into being a fan of my players. My games will never have an adversarial (GM vs Players) spirit. I will cheer with you while you slay my Big Bad Evil Guy with a critical hit. Currently, I’m focused on running games for new players, with the goal of helping them learn the game and develop a lasting interest in the hobby.

How MikeTheDM runs games

As a burgeoning DM, I still have a lot to learn and experience but let me showcase a few important aspects of my DM style. -Tone- I tend to be a more serious toned DM and tend to run games that have fewer whimsical elements to them. I prefer that humor would come from something that your characters say and do rather than 4th wall breaking references and whatnot. -Roleplaying- I am hardly a theater kid or a voice actor. In saying that I do try my best to inject each NPC with some personality that would hopefully make them distinct from one another. I have never ran a homebrew campaign, I mainly stick to modules and adaptations. Although that may disqualify me from being called a storyteller, I do my best to make the worlds these games take place in have cohesion and believable reactivity. -Combat- In terms of immersion, I tend to have a battle map ready for most encounters in the games I run. I do my best to make my NPCs fight in a manner that aligns with their own motives and intelligence. In terms of mechanics, I leverage FoundryVTT to automate some combat elements to help combat feel more like the frenetic experiences they are supposed to be. If I ever DM for you, above all else, I will try to run a fun game.

I deal with rules issues by...

making quick decisions based on RAW and fairness in mind. After the session ends rules can be discussed further in order to resolve issues.

I prep by

setting aside time everyday to calculate npc behaviors, the consequences of party actions, and preparing future content.

Rules are...

paramount.

MikeTheDM's ideal table

Regardless of what is being played, an Ideal game is where everyone is focused on the game, everyone learns the rules, and everyone tries to role play.

I love it when a player

understands the rules enough so that they can focus on roleplaying their characters instead of worrying about rule conflicts

I think metagaming...

is perfectly fine in my games as long as I can't tell you're doing it.

I think min/maxing...

is perfectly fine as long as you don't impede the fun of other players.
