About Jay
Hi! My name is Jay. I've been playing TTRPGs (primarily D&D) since around 2005 and have been GMing nearly as long. I have several multi-year campaigns under my belt, as well as a generous collection of digital maps and assets. I also collect dragon miniatures, most of which have seen combat at my table! My storytelling style is cinematic and character-driven. I like to create narrative moments that draw on PC backstories and world lore for deep, meaningful interactions. I want to give my players experiences that they can't help but annoy their non-gamer friends with. My table is a safe, inclusive space. Everyone is welcome no matter their roots, culture, religion, creed, orientation, gender identity, or politics. The caveat to that is that I will not allow insensitive or bigoted behaviour of any kind. I provide a form to all new players on which they can mark particular subject matters that they would prefer to avoid. If you'd like to request a particular kind of game at my table, please fill out my New Campaign Form: https://tinyurl.com/3wr5p7yz May the dice gods be with you! -J

I became a GM because
I really wanted to learn how to play D&D but none of my friends wanted to run a game, so I bit the bullet. I came up with a really crappy homebrew campaign that I ran with eight players plus a DMPC that I was running. It was a terrible attempt, but at least I got to eat weekly pizza with my friends!
My favorite shows/movies are
Dropout content (esp. Dimension 20), Doctor Who, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Firefly/Serenity, Hannibal, Jekyll, Attack on Titan, Star Trek (esp. DS9), Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Godzilla Minus One, Jurassic Park, Jaws, The Thing, Marvel phases 1 - 4, Train to Busan, 12 Angry Men,
When I'm not running games I'm...
Editing video, proofreading, playing drums and guitar, writing, swimming, playing video games.
How Jay runs games
I don't like to give a straight "no" as an answer if I can give a "yes, but" instead. I like to run epic, long-term campaigns with challenging battles, engaging NPCs, and world-shattering stakes. I've also been known to run slower, more psychological adventures that play on paranoia while focusing on mystery and survival. I typically allow any classes/races/items that can be found in official sourcebooks or supplements, and I usually approve homebrew as long as it isn't overpowered and doesn't clash with the setting. I tend to be generous with loot, but with enemies too. PVP is generally discouraged, but can be allowed if the narrative calls for it AND if everyone involved has given enthusiastic consent. And yes, I do like to do voices!

I deal with rules issues by...
Examining the source material closely. If the ruling is still unclear, I look online to see what others have ruled in similar situations. If the ruling is still unclear, I will make a call based on what makes sense to me.
I once ran a session...
Back in the days of 3.5, I ran a session where the party had to defend a city against the tarrasque. They were pretty high level at this point, so I doubled the tarrasque's HP in anticipation of a huge amount of damage. I ended up doubling the HP again when they fought even better than I expected.
My games focus on...
World-shaking stakes and life-altering decisions, with some comedy peppered in for levity. I like to give my players freedom to explore their place within the world, so I rarely give a straight "no" when asked a question.
Jay's ideal table
I enjoy running games for players who are curious, resourceful, and collaborative. I expect a basic level of respect and decency for everyone present. I will not tolerate bullying or cruelty.

I am for a vibe that's...
…a mix of epic stakes, emotional roleplay, and tongue-in-cheek humour. We all know that most D&D campaigns start out trying to be LOTR, turn into Monty Python, and eventually become their own mix of funny and tragic.
I love it when a player
…wants to do something that’s not covered by Rules As Written. Whether I can find a home brew ruling online or I have to come up with something on the fly, it’s always a thrill knowing that I can allow an option that might not have been allowed in a different story.
My table is not the place for...
Players who prefer to roll-play without roleplaying, people whose behaviour make it hard for others to enjoy the game, murderhobos, bigots, fascists.
