About Lucas Duff

Hi there, I'm Lucas the GM/Producer of Ballad of the Seven Dice, Rise of Nyarlathotep and Escaping Carcosa! I have been playing games for a long time and have played numerous systems but always find myself coming back to D&D. I'm very big on the rule of cool, collaborative storytelling, and working with the players to create moments they will remember for years to come. I have a tendency to lean more towards horror and body horror as I feel you can get some exciting and memorable tales that way. Safety tools are a must with me so I know what to avoid and what I can go all in on to make this story better. If you're looking for cinematic boss fights, stories tailored to your characters, and itching for that next session, then I'm the GM for you!

I became a GM because

we all wanted to play more and I was the one who was willing to step up. 20 years later I'm still doing it and having a blast. I try to embrace the new changes, welcome new perspectives, and keep games fresh and fun for everyone!

My favorite shows/movies are

One Piece, Galavant, and Digimon the Movie! I think I've seen Galavant three or four times now as the songs are catchy. One Piece has been a constant for over 15 years teaching me the right lessons about community and peace. Digimon the Movie is an absolute classic.

When I'm not running games I'm...

creating the Ballad of the Seven Dice TTRPG podcast! I love bringing stories to life with editing, music, and sfx.

How Lucas Duff runs games

For my Gaming style I tend to lean towards favouring story to mechanics. The rules are important but so is the story we tell. I enjoy doing character voices and will always leave room for roleplay. I've worked with many first time players and people new to the systems so don't worry about not keeping up. We will have you knee deep in a character build and immersed in no time! I have a tendency to lean more towards horror and body horror as I feel you can get some exciting and memorable tales that way. Safety tools are a must with me so I know what to avoid and what I can go all in on to make this story better. I will always have a free session zero before campaigns to have everything fleshed out. If you're looking for cinematic boss fights, stories tailored to your characters, and itching for that next session, then I'm the GM for you! Things excluded from my games - Racism - Homophobia/Transphobia - Sexism - Sexual Assault - Violence to children - Graphic torture - Graphic sex scenes

I deal with rules issues by...

Talking to my players about it and we logic it out. If there are rules that conflict lets figure out what makes sense to us and we can take it from there.

My favorite trope is...

Cosmic horror goals that seem so alien and off. Have the party go on this great conquest against some outer god only to find out the outer gods goals were not global domination or consuming everyone but simply shifting time a few hours or erasing everyone's memories on three specific dates.

My games focus on...

roleplaying. We will have combat and all the good dice rolls but i will always try to make room for roleplay. That roleplay can also be in combat or dungeon delving, but balance is key.

Lucas Duff's ideal table

Players that really love diving into their characters and finding out what makes them tick is a big one that fits in well at my table. It's important to also be pleasant to your fellows, i know this seems obvious but after GMing for a long time you meet some people. People who like a good amount of roleplay but also enjoy some combat. I try to have combat every second session in a normal campaign if i can help it. I'm really looking for players that want to be a part of the story we are all telling together. Even if you're new to the game and are nervous, giving it an honest go is a big deal and one I appreciate. It's easy to get lost in the mechanics of the game, but remember that roleplaying and telling a story is the big feature of TTRPGs.

I love it when a player

is willing to put their character in a bad position or some sort of danger because they feel strongly that their character would make that sacrifice to do something like standing in the way of a crossbow to protect an innocent or gamble away years of life for power.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Are trying to screw over the party in some way. Stealing from fellow adventurers, pick fights, try to ruin scenes for others, suffer from main character syndrome. There are plenty of red flags out there.

My perfect party mix is

whatever makes you all happy. I've run a game where everyone was a variation of rogue. I can make anything work, the most important thing is you're all having a good time and lock in what you wanna play.
