About Rivas

🤠 Howdy Adventurer! 🤠 My personality: Open- 🤗 Industrious- 💪 Extrovert- 🥳 Agreeable- 👍 Unworried- 🙂 I've been running D&D since 2014. I initially enjoyed the game as a player, but very quickly thought that I could do better than my DM at the time 😅. I started watching Critical Role and Matt Colville as they were begining and developed my unique style 😎. Using collaboration and improv to tell memorable stories keeps me coming back to the table 🔁. My favorite D&D moments come from players creating unique and clever solutions to their character's problems 👀. I knew D&D would be a lifelong hobby when I found my wife through it. My profile pic is from our wedding! We met through a Navy buddy of mine who played D&D with her. I feel incredibly grateful to the hobby as a whole, and I would love the opportunity to run a session for you!

How Rivas runs games

Role Playing? ✅ Exploration? ✅ Combat? ✅ Fun?💯 My games tend to have an even spread between combat 🤺, role playing 🎭, and exploration 🧭, but I a more than happy to personalize those to your desires. I enjoy complex themes like, political intrigue 🧐, moral dilemmas ⚖️, and high stakes💀. I mostly stick to the rules 📒, but smart ideas or a willingness to roll the dice can convince me to bend them 🤫. New/shy players can feel free to sit back and enjoy the ride 🚇. Alternatively, if you feel confident or experienced we can try a more sandbox approach👌. I enjoy running games in all kinds of settings, but my homebrew setting draws from some of my favorite inspirations: Dune ⛱️➡️💧 Zelda 🔺 Deltora Quest 💎💎💎 Pendragon 🚪➡️ ⁉️ Once Upon a Time in the West 🎶🚂

My games focus on...

Players making meaningful choices. I enjoy the process of discovering how players cause their characters to impact the campaign.

Rules are...

interpreted. I strive to find a healthy balance between adhering to expectations and exciting exceptions.

Rivas's ideal table

While I do not force players to create characters of certain alignment, I do strongly encourage players to consider the narraitve difficulty of working towards a common party goal. I regard the responsibility for creatively engaging in team play as falling on the player, but I certainly enjoy helping in any way I can. Occasionally, I encounter a scenario where a character's motivation and backstory lead to a moment that causes division in the party. In these cases, I prompt the player to consider letting the divisive character become an antagonist Non-Player Character (NPC) and building a new character as a replacement. Meme characters will feel off tone in my games.

Featured Prompts

I think it's a red flag when players...

expect uncommunicated expectations. I encourage players to feel comfortable enough to tell each other about behaviors they dislike. Each member of the party has a responsibility to contribute to both the health of the group and their enjoyment of the group.

I think metagaming...

correlates with, but does not cause or imply, unsportsmanlike behavior. Metagaming for the sake of building a character that fits into party composition demonstrates good metagaming. Looking up an enemies stat block represents unsportsmanlike behavior.
