About Jayden

Hi there! I'm Jayden, or Skulgren in other places online! I started running D&D about ten years ago for my wife and a good friend as a way to relax after college classes. Since then the group has grown and we have been playing every week (mostly!) together, spanning 3 campaigns spanning every tier of play. I've done charity work as a volunteer GM, and run a smaller game for some streamer friends. I love running games that feel alive, where the players feel like the main characters on a stage filled with other actors. I still run 5e and have been using both the 2014 and 2024 rule set. I've got a homebrew world most of my games have been set in, but I've also run games in the Forgotten Realms and in Eberron. I like to run games where the players' goals and ambitions drive the story, with long story arcs that tie into character motivations. All of my games are collaborative, between players and the GM, with just one main rule: "Don't be a dick to each other." Everything else is optional and would be decided as a group before we start playing. Most of my games tend to be a bit more serious in tone, where the choices the players make have real and lasting consequences for themselves and for the world as a whole. Everything responds to player actions, for good and for bad, in a way that makes sense for their skills, temperaments, and abilities. Villains adapt to tactics, allies remember kindness, and both victories and failures lead to new stories instead of dead ends.

I got started GMing...

because I wanted to do something with friends, and I picked up the GM guide on impulse. One thing led to another and here we are!

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Creative, fun, supportive!

When I'm not running games I'm...

swimming with my son, playing games on Steam, or reading/listening to a book.

I once ran a session...

for a friend's brithday that involved 12 players at level 20. They went up against the 7 Deadly Sins (Meliodas and crew) in an all-out slugfest. It was glorious, and a great learning experience for me haha!

I prep by

reviewing what was done before, what my players gave for feedback, and planning ahead on what else can be done.

Rules are...

the framework that the game uses. They are guidelines that keeps things consistent, but they aren't meant to be followed all of the time. As long as things are fair and fun that is all that matters.

Jayden's ideal table

My players tell me I run an immersive and engaging game, where the world reacts and responds to each player choice, and for me there is no greater praise. My games are a moment of peace from day-to-day reality. I work very hard to make a place where people can leave their worries at the door. I tend to follow the rules of the game closely, but am fine deviating from them where it would enhance the game and make sense in the moment.

I love it when a player

takes notes, gets engaged, and does their best to have a great time.

I think it's a red flag when players...

choose to prioritize their own enjoyment over the other's at the table. This is a collaborative game, and it is best enjoyed when everyone is enjoying it.

My perfect party mix is

one where each player is playing what they feel is fun without needing to worry about the "perfect party composition".
