About Jake J.

My name is Jake! An enthusiast for all manner of games and holding a love for worldbuilding, it turns out GMing was well suited for me. I have been doing it for a little over a year by the time of this profile's creation. I have a thorough knowledge of game design, possessing a degree in the subject, and understand what makes a game fun. I alter game systems with my own minor modifications whether it's to make an unloved ability worth taking or insert some measure of common sense for interesting effect. It turns out that breaking the sound barrier has consequences! More importantly I aim to ensure a smooth game for each session that feels both challenging and rewarding. I also hold a degree in creative writing! I am all about creating stories with plot and narrative, not to mention intricate worldbuilding, then tying players into that story! I will alter the whole world if it meant a player could fit in their unique origin story! While I do write sessions ahead of time, I am absolutely willing to scrap the entire future story and start an entire new branch of the timeline should the party decide on a new direction! Lastly I know that the human body isn't meant to be RPGing for 4 hours straights, so breaks will be a thing.

My favorite books are

The Ciaphas Cain novels. They're just such a breath of fresh air and I always find myself going back to them.

How Jake J. runs games

Players and their characters are the focus of my game. Nothing makes me happier than a well fleshed out character. I will endeavor to make entire stories dedicated to each in my campaigns. I often have a session 0 where I dedicate a 1 hour mini-session to each player one on one, building a rapport between GM and player as well as developing the characters. For character creation, I am all for creating new rules and even giving boons for the sake of making a completed character we all can enjoy. I know the rules for the games quite well, but I am open to breaking them if common sense or the Rule of Cool comes into play. I will listen to fair arguments and always keep an open mind. For structure, I primarily focus on combat with breaks of narrative episodes. Combat I try to make interesting, putting you through interesting scenarios that aren't just a factor of enemies but the environment and their tactics. I also see combat as a means of enhancing the story and developing character. For more narrative episodes, I like to ask players what their preferred path and method of doing it is. Say they need to make peace between two countries. Do they vote on if they want to support only one? How do they go about it? It's things like these where I believe player choice matters more than anything. I shouldn't just set a scenario, I should let the players create it. Lastly, I like to make modifications to game systems as I see fit. Whether it's just to make an unloved ability powerful enough to be taken or a dose of common sense that brings a fair balance to system. For example, in Mutants and Masterminds 3E, I have a rule that if a player goes fast enough to break the sound barrier, they do. It causes a complication that they have to carefully manage. I don't think a city of people would be happy about going deaf.
