About me

I started running tabletop games in college because, before I knew about sites like this one, it was the only way to get a game going! Like many people, I love games for their ability to allow self-expression and to engage the overly-active, in my case) imagination. However, recently I have been focusing on running as tight, efficient, and economical a session as I can; playing with people who I've never met is a great way to do that! I'm getting better all the time, and looking forward to learning and gaming with you. As is tradition, I began with the dragon game (edition 3.5), and have since discovered indie RPGs and storygames - this is where my joy really lies. I love to trawl itch.io for little-known gems and am always looking for excuses to play them! Currently I am running Heart: the City Beneath and Fathom, with an interest in playing ICON and Triangle Agency.

GM Style

I take a very top-down approach to game running. I make liberal use of techniques like Paint the Scene - asking leading questions to collaboratively create the setting, characterize NPCs, and so on. I will ask what your character is thinking/feeling and what they want to do next, rather than trying to intuit. If we imagine our game as a film or TV show, I will describe the scenery & events of the game as the camera would see them, rather than from the first-person perspective of the PC. I view my role as similar to the director: I coordinate and direct the creative energy and imagination you bring to the table. The story is yours! I'm just here to facilitate it being told. That said, I do bring my own interests. I'm fascinated by the human-level impacts of large-scale political movements like war, disaster, or solidarity. I have a particular interest in exploring ideas of alternate worlds/timelines, and will likely incorporate those in some way to any game I play. I also love folk/bluegrass music, and will cram a mandolin or barn dance in at any opportunity.
