About Ian

Hi! My name is Ian and I have been a DM for over 25 years! I started with 3rd edition D&D, and these days play 5e and 5.5 edition dungeons and dragons. I play with mostly homebrew worlds and have over a thousand pages of lore, custom classes, spells, monsters, magical items, and spiecies to draw from. I am a feminist, am LGBTQ+ friendly, and like to run Final Fantasy-esc high fantasy campaigns with lots of adventure.

I became a GM because

I love telling stories! Sitting back and laughing or being surprised by the humor or bravery of a player at our table will never, ever get old.

My favorite books are

Priory of The Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, City in The Middle of The Night by Charlie Jane Anders, and World War Z by Max Brooks

My favorite shows/movies are

Midnight Mass, Mr. Robot, Claymore, Samurai Champloo, and Dark are great shows! For movies, Cloud Atlas, 28 Days Later, Contagion, The Fountain, Arrival, and of course Jurassic Park (insert dinosaur emoji here).

How Ian runs games

I am mostly story-focused, but love good dungeons and combat. I want everyone to have a good time, and don't get too hung up on the rules. I want to tell a collaborative story, and challenge my players but also give them room to do awesome stuff and feel heroic.

I prep by

I spend hours, sometimes literal days, preparing a session of D&D. I love a good sandbox, and want my players to feel free to do whatever it is they want to do, but I also want the world they enter to feel real, lived in, and believable. It's a lot of work!

My games focus on...

High fantasy, adventure, and epic battles of good vs. evil. I want our campaigns to feel like your best memories from a good Final Fantasy game or JRPG, or the best old years of World of Warcraft. We will explore ancient ruins, fight powerful bosses, and meet lovable NPCs.

Rules are...

Fine in moderation! We aren't here to get too hung-up on the exact rules as written. Why would we be playing a game based entirely in our imaginations just to pin our feet to the ground with what we can and can't do!? But rules are a nice framework to start with..

Ian's ideal table

In a perfect world, the ideal table is one that never ends. We play for hours and weeks and months and years, going on quest after quest and journey after journey in an ever-evolving fantasy world we create together as a team. Let the books of our campaigns fill a five story library!

I am for a vibe that's...

Relaxed! Are you new to D&D? That's fine! This isn't a setting that will demand you know every little rule or nuance, or that you are constantly paying attention and perfectly organizing your character sheet. We're all here to have fun, hang out, and go on an adventure together.

I love it when a player

Surprises me! It is so fun to see someone do something out-of-pocket silly or heroic and brave. The best part of this game are the ways a group can come together and create a story that's hasn't been told before. It will never, ever get old.

My perfect party mix is

Whatever feels good to play! This isn't an MMO, and you don't have to worry about the perfect ratio of DPS/Tank/Healer or party composition here. The world exists to be lived in, regardless of waht the group living in it looks like.
