About Todd
My background is in improv, so my games often have a free-flowing narrative that provides direction and motivations for players, with flexibility and opportunities for player choice and volition. I'm looking forward to gaming with you!

I became a GM because
I really, really love a good, collaborative story.
When I'm not running games I'm...
working at my day job (I own an ad agency), performing with my improv troupe or backpacking with no access to technology. It’s glorious.
How Todd runs games
I love the stories that emerge from a group of players who are wholly invested in their characters. They understand their backstories, consistently behave in alignment with their values and experiences, and are invested in their role in the context of the whole group. To that end, role playing takes the forefront of my games. I love bringing NPCs and environments to life. I try to do voices, but sadly I’m pretty terrible at voice acting. So, apologies for that in advance! Combat in my games typically takes place on a gridded map. I enjoy the tactical aspect of the game, but don’t love when it gets bogged down unnecessarily. I like my players to stay engaged between their turns and ready to act when they’re up. I also love and reward creative thinking and non-typical actions in combat. I’m not great at devising puzzles, but I can stretch that muscle if the story calls for it! Lastly, I want the game to be a collaboration. Even if using a published adventure, I want the players to feel invested and in charge of their story.

My favorite trope is...
starting in a tavern. It’s so cliche, but I really do love it.
When it comes to voices
I sure try hard. But woof. It’s rough.
Todd's ideal table
I love a dynamic, inclusive, collaborative group that encourages and celebrates each other. It’s often awkward to foster that with an online group, but my groups with StartPlaying have almost always found their way there. I also love consistency. I’ve been running a game with the same group for more than two years now, by far my most consistent tabletop gaming experience as an adult.

I love it when a player
finds their character’s “why” and leans into it.
I think it's a red flag when players...
don’t share the spotlight.
