I deal with rules issues by...

trying to be as accurate as possible, but the flow of the game is paramount. If we're taking too long to hash out a rule, I'll make a ruling, and let the players know they can talk to me later if it still bothers them. I'm also open to player's corrections and disagreements! It's our game.

I prep by

following the steps of Sly Flourish's Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master. While I have my eye on the overall narrative, each game prep is for what's right in front of me: The player characters, their stories, and what they're about to encounter.

When it comes to voices

I do a lot of them! I find it helps immersion to give you the most fully realized representations of NPCs as possible. My goal is to have unique voices for NPCs that will make them recognizable to you without me saying their names. Player characters voices are welcome but not required!

Jay's ideal table

My table is one that exists across the spectrum of tragedy and comedy. One minute we'll be joking about a player character's use of prestidigitation to soil a barkeeps pants, and the next the table will immerse themselves in the stakes of a horrific battle to save a child from being consumed by a hag. Players will succeed at my table if they have a desire to learn their character's mechanics & leave the real world behind to get lost in their character's motivations and circumstances.

I am for a vibe that's...

immersive above all, but room is left for humor. We are here to have fun.

I think metagaming...

has it's place. My best advice to enjoy my games: Always think about & act on things in the world of the game first, but there's room for meta-conversations to gain clarity or add depth to the narrative. If it's in service of the story & everyone's clarity, meta gaming is fine.

My table is not the place for...

evil exhibitionism. I will not engage in someone's personal fantasy of torture and/or hate. We are telling a story about complex heroes in a gritty world, but that doesn't mean we have to be edge lords, hateful, or offensive. I have a zero tolerance policy on this. Basically: don't be a dick.
