About Gee-Em Ryan
I'm Ryan! I'm a GM / Player from Australia that has spent a good majority of my life playing TTRPGs and telling joined narrative stories with friends and strangers. I think that TTRPGs are not only some of the best ways to tell narratives and collaborate with others—they're also the best ways to get to meet and know new people. I spent a lot of my early time in TTRPGs playing a lot of full tactical games, then when I got bored of them I went in the complete opposite direction, being narrative rules-lite games. In recent years I've discovered that both are amazing and great experiences in their own ways, but my time on each extreme has really trained my ability to be both a player and GM in these different paradigms of game.

I got started GMing...
Because there weren't a lot of TTRPG players in my general vicinity and definitely no people who were interested in a lot of the games I wanted to play! I thought if I could GM I could get people into the hobby and show people some new RPGs!
My favorite system of all Time is
MASKS: A New Generation! I think it so perfectly and concisely understands the genre it tries to emulate while still leaving room for each character to tell the story in the way they'd like to. The playbooks are so evocative and the condition and influence systems were relatively revolutionary!
How Gee-Em Ryan runs games
My GMing style for one shots is to create stories based on scenarios—short and memorable. These stories will have quickly intensifying situations, with each character playing their part in the many ways that situation could go. This usually is a lot of roleplay with combat or setpieces emerging depending on how the characters traverse the situations. My goal for one shots is to have a lot of fun in a short time and to give you 'that story' you can tell your friend about to get them interested in RPGs. For campaigns, my goal is to give players a setting or prompt about the kind of game we're playing and then allow them to create their characters to fill that world. The ideal scenario is then to use the players' lovingly crafted characters to explore the players' interpretations and ideas in response to the game's listing in service of crafting a well put-together joint narrative experience.

My favorite trope is...
For campaigns, my favourite trope is DEFINITELY the rival party. I think having a group of foils or just a bunch of characters with some kind of rival relationship to the PCs creates such a fun dynamic and opens the door for a bunch of different types of relationship.
When it comes to voices
I'm not great, but I try to use unique intonation, language and speech patterns to make up for it!

I love it when a player
Takes control of the narrative for a bit! I love asking questions like "How does your character decorate their room?" or "What do you think you see?" or "How does your character feel?" Because I want to see the minutia of the character's world and I love to see characters with that thought in them!
My table is not the place for...
