About Rae
My name is Rae, and I was first introduced to playing role play games with my tattoo artist in 2019. I got into a lot of text based rpgs after that, especially during the pandemic, and I became very familiar with a lot of different systems, worlds, genres, and styles. Some I really enjoyed, and others I found I didn't enjoy as much. I've played over a hundred characters, from Elven edgelords to ba space mechanics to bubbly jesters. I've played in campaigns ranging from sci-fi, fantasy, modern, alternate reality, horror, pirate, and even more. I've been running games for almost as long as I've been playing, and have run nearly every style game I can think of, aside from gritty realism. My biggest focus is making sure everyone feels safe and has fun at my table!

I became a GM because
I absolutely adore stories. I've been writing since I was 13, and love creating worlds that people feel immersed enough in to lose themselves to. A setting that feels alive, a world that breathes, characters that feel like old friends (or bitter enemies!). Becoming a GM gave me new ways to do so.
My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be
Forbidden Lands, Wander Home, and Dolmenwood
My favorite books are
Sherlock Holmes Robin Hood Ivanhoe When the Tides Held the Moon Warrior Cats (and I will stand by that no matter how many decades pass!) Henry V I also enjoy various books of poetry.
How Rae runs games
My favorite games to run are fantasy, whether that's in a pirate setting or a steampunk world or a high magic kingdom or anything in between. I enjoy sandbox worlds, hex exploration systems, and homebrew storylines, but I don't enjoy the official premade story lines. I would have to say my favorite campaign style is probably a sandbox world using hex exploration for the wilderness, incorporated into a storyline. Having a storyline driven game play can help make exploration fun and give it a purpose. I find things like "Hot Springs Island" and "Into the Wyrd and Wild" very helpful with that. I enjoy having mysteries, puzzles, moral quandaries, and heavier roleplay in my campaigns, but I don't like gritty realism, tons of combat, or making players feel like they don't have agency in the game. I play to tell a story, and feel that dice are secondary to telling the story. For example, if a character is a skilled craftsman, I don't think they should have to make a roll to see if they can do their craft unless there's a reason they couldn't (such as attempting to carve while riding or something that creates an added challenge). For me, I feel like the players know what their characters can do, to a reasonable extent, and that dice rolls should be used more sparingly in storytelling situations. Roleplaying out a conversation with NPCs may not require rolls at all. It's not for everyone, but I enjoy letting players write their stories. The dice, the maps, the sheets, they are all tools. But we make the game. Ultimately, I am a storyteller.

My games focus on...
Telling a collaborative story with twists & turns, highs & lows. My games are usually low combat, just because I don't enjoy using it constantly. I'd rather intrigue, tension, and mystery leading up to a boss fight than 5 small fights that don't advance the story. I love rp and in-character play.
Rules are...
They're tools to be used, and help give structure & a sense of fairness. But to me the story and characters are much bigger than just a set of rules. Rules are made to adapt & change to assist gameplay. For instance, tracking rations is tedious in most settings, but critical in survival games.
When it comes to voices
I do attempt NPC voices! I find them fun, and I think it helps to differentiate who is talking (GM versus NPC). Of course, I'm not a voice actor, so they aren't perfect and I absolutely sometimes get the accents or personalities mixed up when using multiple voices. But I like having fun with it.
Rae's ideal table
If you enjoy political schemes, plot & intrigue, romances, betrayal, and story hooks that make note takers scramble for pens, you'll enjoy playing at my table. If you prefer combat, stat optimization, power builds that focus on being the best in a fight, I don't think you'll be a good fit. My goal is to run an inclusive table where everyone is heard and respected, where players feel safe, and characters do not. Where puzzles, riddles, and exhausting codes lead to excited pride in finally solving the problem. Where threads and plots are woven together to reveal the mechanisms turning the wheel of progress within the world. Where storytellers can unleash their creativity. Where the chaotic can see how many times they can make the gm facepalm! (I'll always remember the characters who got to an ancient tomb and stole the golden doors and had camels drag them away!) Now let's sum that up simply for those of us still on their first energy drink. •storytellers •note takers •puzzle/riddle solvers •truthseekers amidst political machinations •respectful players who accept fellow players as they are ... Come take a seat! My friends who live for combat and glory, I'm sorry but I think you'll be bored.

I am for a vibe that's...
Laid back, supportive, and friendly. I want us to all have fun and enjoy a game together. Players laughing or gasping or even cursing me under their breath when a plot twist is revealed isn't an interruption, it's the fun part of telling stories!
I love it when a player
Gets really involved and excited about their character! Like with making backstories I can weave into the storyline. Or asking about places and people their character might know so they can be part of the world. Or gets completely sidetracked with roleplaying with other players! It's fantastic!
My table is not the place for...
Strict adhesion to the rules. If I get a rule wrong, or don't know something, absolutely please tell me! But if I decide that rations take up less space in inventory, or that an item costs more or less than standard, I don't want it to get into "but the rules say X so we have to do that".
