About Rick D

Head firmly in the clouds! I am a long time fan of science fiction and fantasy genres, absorbing and creating as much as I can while I 'escape' from the humdrum of modernity as a graphic design professional and military veteran. I have 10 years of experience as a game master for both traditional tabletop and role-playing games, Dungeons and Dragons won me over HARD when I was first introduced as a player in 2015 and just 6 months later I was hosting my first game. Since that time I have run (and played in) several campaigns and dozens of one shots in several systems with tweaks and add-ons galore! My first love was and is Catan, I play a yearly game of Explorers and Pirates on my birthday. I used to run monthly sessions of Twilight Imperium longer than I should have, one highlight being back-to-back games over a course of 24 hours for International Tabletop Day a few years back. I try and squeeze in even more games like Dead of Winter, Firefly: The Board Game, and Star Wars: Imperial Assault in when ever we can. Happy to share a shelfie or BGG link!

How Rick D runs games

Dank dungeons drip with silence, fierce enemies lie in wait, challenges in the dark demand a response, eyebrows will be raised... I enjoy collaborating with my players to craft worlds that offer a balance of rewarding exploration, challenging combat, laughable role-play, and simpler-than-they-should-be puzzles. From horror-themed one shots that have everyone on edge to epic adventures that have the gang finally getting back together after college for a dungeon crawl, we can do it all. Players can expect a Session 0 that pads out our party dynamic and sets the stage for what is us sure to be a fond adventure!

Featured Prompts

My favorite trope is...

Abandoned dungeons full of emaciated creatures.

My games focus on...

Players having fun with engaging and collaborative sessions that challenge their characters and the party with a balance of combat, role-play, exploration, and puzzles.

When it comes to voices

We will try or we won't, either way we will laugh, the table will laugh, the table is a mimic.

Rick D's ideal table

My ideal table is full of playful and imaginative storytellers eager to make their mark on our crafted collaborative world. Players that understand the 'life-or-death' dynamic facing the characters in an adventuring party while maintaining a cheerful attitude will fit well at the table. Characters will face real challenges and high-stakes that make each roll of the die exciting and meaningful, players should do their best to balance the dark fantasy aesthetic with a light dose of campy humor.

I love it when a player

Surprises me with a creative solution or puts their character in harms way to try and save another. Inspiration coming your way!

I think metagaming...

May cause headaches and should be separate from character conversation.

My perfect party mix is

Healer!!! Fighter. Specialist. Caster.
