About Colin

I started GMing in the 80s when I got hold of the D&D red box Basic Set. I've played and run dozens of different systems since then, including AD&D, GURPS, Call of Cthulhu, Traveller, Shadowrun, Sorcerer, Apocalypse World, Dungeon World, Blades in the Dark, Uncharted Worlds, Masks, and Daggerheart. I'm a big of light and flexible PbtA-style rules, but am by no means a narrativist purist. Swashbuckling adventure is fun! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️LBGTQ+-friendly, 🎉new-player-supportive.

I became a GM because

I was a first one of my friends to own a copy of the game, and I couldn't wait to make it happen.

How Colin runs games

I work for a player-empowered character-focused game. Rules are important, but they shouldn't be allowed to get in the way. Combat should be fast, exciting, and story-centered. Railroading is verboten. An RPG is a team sport, not a movie. I believe the GM's job is to support the players' story, and that means I want you to show up at my table ready to push things forward and make things happen, not just to sit back and expect to be entertained. If you don't feel confident about how to do that, I will be excited to teach you.

I write so very many house rules.

Rules are...

Rules are really useful for making sure everyone around the table understands what's possible and what's *not* possible, especially in a wild fantasy world. But it's also important to keep the game and the story from bogging down and sometimes what you've got to do is make a call and move on.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

My first priority is making sure the player characters are the stars of the show, and that you get to do what *you* think makes sense. If you're going to have to pick options of some kind of script, you might as well be playing a video game. TTRPGs are for playing wide open and full throttle.
