About Rob

Those kids on Stranger Things...they were us. We were the ones TTRPGs were made for, and we made the most of them. I have, at least, for nearly 45 years. I have played and GMed virtually every genre you can name, and in more systems than I can count. I podcast on the topic (look for "Grognards of Gaming" on the FateMaster Cesium channel on YouTube) and I am the forever-GM. I do enjoy being a player too, but I prefer to be the GM. Favorite play styles and systems are already mentioned on my tags in my bio, but I love run FATE Core or FATE Accelerated, as they let me focus on the storytelling without bogging me down in a constant cumbersome state of CharGen. I've never had a disappointed player at my table, and after nearly half a century of gaming, that's really saying something. You'll enjoy yourself too as one of my players -- that I can assure you.

My favorite system of all Time is

FATE Core because it deconstructs RPGs to their mechanical essence allowing the group to focus on storytelling and narrative. We all see the world through a story.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Dramatic, passionate, funny

When I'm not running games I'm...

How Rob runs games

I like a blend of roleplay and tactical combat, with a heavy emphasis on story. I am a storyteller, and for me that comes first. My ratio of gameplay would be about 50% roleplay / 30% exploration & investigation / 20% combat. Player choices have a tremendous impact on the story; no railroading here. I tend to blend a linear story plot with some sandboxing. I like to think that I come to the table with George Lucas's 1974 "The Adventures of the Starkiller" treatment, and at the table, we turn it into "Star Wars". Characters of all stripes thrive in my games: Deeply developed characters with personal goals, team-oriented adventurers, morally gray antiheroes, larger-than-life pulp heroes, etc. I can easily handle a party with a mix of these. I like fast, cinematic combat and prefer when it serves the story. What makes my games different from other GMs is my rich NPCs with distinct personalities, my strong world-building, historical/canonical authenticity when applicable, character-driven storytelling and long-running campaigns where player choices have consequences.

Rob's ideal table

Folks who love a good story. Players who aren't afraid to be proactive with their characters. Fellow storytellers who understand tropes and archetypes and pacing in story flow.
