About Nick

I’m a longtime tabletop player, fantasy fan, and storyteller who loves the part of TTRPGs that can’t really be scripted: a group of people creating a story together and watching it go somewhere none of them quite expected. I’ve played across Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Pathfinder 2e, and the Cosmere RPG, but I’ve especially gravitated toward the Cosmere RPG as a GM. I love its setting, its approach to character-driven storytelling, and the opportunities it gives players to make meaningful choices in a world that feels much bigger than any one adventure. I’m also the kind of person who enjoys everything surrounding the game. I like building out campaign spaces, organizing resources, tinkering with Foundry, preparing the world, and finding little ways to make it easier for players to get immersed and feel like they’re part of something. More than anything, I enjoy bringing people together around a table, giving them a world to explore, and seeing what they do with it.

I started running games because...

I’ve always chased games where choices really matter, and eventually decided to make my own. There are never enough GMs, I love tinkering with Foundry, and I love helping players build characters they genuinely connect with.

My favorite books are

The Stormlight Archive, Mary Stewart’s Merlin Trilogy, The Dark Tower, The Demon Cycle, The Dresden Files, The First Law, Ghost Hotel, The Count of Monte Cristo, and yeah, I’m still a sucker for Harry Potter.

How Nick runs games

I run character-focused games where player choices matter. I prepare thoroughly and give the world, its characters, and its conflicts plenty of structure, but I am not interested in pushing players through a predetermined story. I want your decisions, relationships, successes, mistakes, and ridiculous ideas to genuinely change what happens next. Roleplay and storytelling are a big part of my games, but I also enjoy the mechanics of the system. Combat should have a reason to happen and give different characters opportunities to use the abilities that make them unique. I would rather run one memorable encounter with interesting choices than add multiple fights just because there is time for them. I generally use the rules as our shared foundation, but I am comfortable making judgment calls when the rules do not quite fit the situation. Creative solutions are encouraged, and I am happy to let the rule of cool have its moment when it makes sense without turning the game into "anything goes." I’m always learning as a GM and getting deeper into the system alongside my players. If you think I’ve misunderstood a rule or made the wrong call, I’m completely open to reviewing it and talking it through.

I prep by

I prep by reviewing the last session, tracking character goals and loose threads, updating NPCs based on what the party has done, and making sure Foundry is ready to go so we can jump right into the game.

When it comes to voices

I’ll try my best! Some accents are better than others, and a few are downright awful, so bear with me. I read to my kids in different voices, though, so I’ve had some practice.

Nick's ideal table

My ideal table is a group that gets invested not just in their own characters, but in each other's. I love players who make interesting choices, share the spotlight, ask questions, come up with ridiculous plans, and give serious moments room to breathe when they happen. The tone can shift from dramatic fantasy to everyone laughing at something completely unexpected. A lot of that comes from the players themselves, and I like letting each group develop its own personality. Experience isn't important to me. You don't need to know every rule, build the perfect character, or know the setting inside and out. Bring a character you want to explore, be willing to engage with the rest of the group, and treat everyone at the table with respect.

I think metagaming...

is sometimes hard to avoid, especially when you know the system or setting well. I’m not going to police every thought, but I may occasionally ask, “Is that something your character would actually know?”

I think min/maxing...

is fine if that’s how you enjoy building a character, whether you’re optimizing for combat, social encounters, or exploration. I’ll just adjust challenges as needed so everyone still gets opportunities to shine.
