About Evil A

Hi there. My name is Jesus Avila, and I have been GM-ing D&D 5e since my last deployment in 2018. I began playing D&D 3.5, but have only ever DM'ed 5e. I have run approximately 10 campaigns, and all have been homebrewed settings and adventures. I started out making all the classic rookie DM blunders like overpreparing, stressing that PCs were winning too easily and even holding too hard to rules as written. I have had enough time to cool it with all of that and have been running easy/low effort games for years now. My players and their characters are the stars, and I do love when they shine. Having said that, I do not write hard plots with hopes of players following along, I instead try to give the players the chance to pursue their characters' goals. Call it lazy, but the story is whatever my players bring. My end of the work is tying together the party, and occasionally throwing a call to action their way if they get shy.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Imaginative, comedic, methodical.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Hanging out with my wife. She is my best friend. We've been married for a decade and dated for a years before that. If home alone i'm either making an effort to read, or doing my best effort as a househusband.

How Evil A runs games

I like to run homebrewed adventures tailored to the player characters. I play with theater of the mind, but have been known to furiously scribble a map to share if my descriptions of placement in combat get too confusing. I do roleplay, and even attempt voices when the NPC concept seems right. Some of my players have told me that my combat is often scary, so maybe high-stakes, but I would never call myself tactical. What makes my GM-ing different is how fast I can go from serious to absurd and vice versa.

I prep by

asking my players what they think they want their characters to get into next, and prepping for that specifically.

My games focus on...

beating up bad guys by default. If the players are into it, my games focus on the player characters resolving backstory stuff.

Rules are...

Rules are helpful, but can be outdone or done without from time to time.

Evil A's ideal table

My table has typically been full of friends of mine, or people who were friends with each other. The types of players that fit well at my table are players who care about each other having a good time. The general vibe at my table is like a Friendsgiving where everyone brought dice.

I love it when a player

serves up another player to have their moment. or engages the party in "get to know you" type of roleplay. or finds a chair (in character) to throw to get something going.

I think min/maxing...

just fine. Do everything you can to make sure the party makes it back alive.

My table is not the place for...

Bullies. Be nice.
