About Gage Hamey

Hey! I am Gage. I have been playing DND and tabletops in a variety of forms since around 2013. Although I have played a variety of tabletops, most of my experience is in 5e, 3.5e, and VTM 5th edition. I started DM'ing campaigns in 5e in 2017 and have loved it! I have spent almost that entire time building a homebrew world from scratch. It has expanded greatly throughout this time and I have had the benefit of being able to get maps and other resources together because of the multiple campaigns I have run in it.

I became a GM because

I wanted to create a world and have something that felt alive and moving. Players help contribute to that desire with their characters and in-game actions, so it really feels like a special thing.

My favorite books are

Lord of the Rings 1984 Animal Farm

My favorite system of all Time is

3.5e, that system gets so goofy with the things you can create.

How Gage Hamey runs games

Roleplay is great, especially in-between players. I prefer to run the world and facilitate an environment for the players to work together and interact with eachother. When I do run combat, it is difficult, I want most combats to feel like they are life and death; that they matter. This is the reason my games are usually lighter on combat. I am also a HUGE fan of puzzles and solutions to problems that are not violent. Finally, I am a big fan of consequences, the players can do anything they want in the world, but the world will react accordingly!

I once ran a session...

on a projector in an university lecture hall. It worked, somewhat.

I prep by

I write constantly in my free time, so most of my prep is making sure I have maps and stage setting devices that can help players feel more invested in the world. Actually session prep is a wing and a prayer.

Rules are...

Guidelines that we're meant to follow for the system that we choose to play. That being said, some rules are stupid and deserve to be thrown out. (Looking at you, carry weight)

Gage Hamey's ideal table

Players that know that its just a game that is mean to be fun will fit in well. I like to tell a serious story and have players invested, but there will pretty much always be a bit of silliness here or there.

I love it when a player

Interacts with the world, asks questions, or takes interest in a specific portion of lore.

I think metagaming...

to a certain extent is alright. At the end of the day, the goal is to have fun, so if that means a little information travels between characters telepathically, its no big deal. I do like to keep some things on a character need to know basis, if they are major plot points.

I think min/maxing...

Cringe. I get that its fun to make number go high, but it can really take away from other people if one person min/maxes.
