About Christian Vancil

Hi, My name is Christian. I have been playing TTRPG's for about 12 years! My interests span from TTRPG's, board-games, and video-games. I have been on both sides of the dice but find myself enjoying the games the most when I am facilitating the story. Pathfinder second edition is where I have spent most of my time and currently make it my home.

I got started GMing...

I currently am still with the very first group that I became a GM for over 10 years ago. I have always been around games, whether they be boardgames or TTRPG's and find such a creative outlet and relief telling stories. I hope to expand that creativity to multiple groups and systems.

My favorite books are

I find comfort in classics. Dragonlance, Drizzt, and extended star wars universe. More recently Brandon Sanderson's cosmere and Malazan book of the fallen have gripped my life. There is something about a simple hero story or a complex world that I gravitate towards.

My favorite system of all Time is

Pathfinder has and will always be my favorite. That may be because it was my first system I played in. The second addition has only strengthened that. Systems I want to get involved in would be the cosmete rpg and daggerheart in the future.

How Christian Vancil runs games

I love to focus on narrative driven story telling that focuses on player's backgrounds! Everyone loves a good combat and one that is done well can be truly exciting but I find absolute joy spotlighting characters at pivotal moments, making them apart of the story, and writing for example vignettes for characters. The more Role-play you are game for the better the experience at the table will be. Creative solutions to combats are a bonus!

My favorite trope is...

My favorite trope and overwhelming cliche isight vs. Dark something that the Age of Umbra in daggerheart is particulry focused on. It's classic and the sides are clear. The morally gray areas of campaigns can be exciting but there is something about facing down evil as a glowing paladin.

My games focus on...

I would say at its best my games focus in character backstorying and integrations into fleshed out modules and universes. Working with players to create those moments beyond the module are what I strive for and having players feel like they have a stake in the world and game.

Rules are...

Great. Most of the time. I live that there are systems that we can all enjoy and emerse in. The best moments have nothing to do with rules. The best characters deviate from the norm. Even the best combats rarely do people remember the numbers.

Christian Vancil's ideal table

I always day, the ideal table for me is 70/30. 70% serious and 30% hilarity. It's a balance that keeps things going and light. Great games keep players coming back but laughter can keep a group together. Got to have both.
