About Dacota

Been playing TTRPGs for 15 years now on and off. I have had the majority of that being behind the gm's screen working on creativing and colabrative story telling with those who I've run for. I've worked mostly with Dungeons and Dragons but have tried several other systems and am interested in broadening my ability to run different systems and I am pretty quick to pick up new mechanical information from the games I do pick up. I normally tend to run homebrew adventures with very little experience with actual written modules but I have run a few of them for people as one shots.

I got started GMing...

because the folks that taught me how to play weren't as story focused as I wanted to be. It was a lot of dungeon delving and combat but I found the stakes lacking so I managed to get them interested in my story hooks and the rest is hisotry.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Friendly, Relaxed, and Funny. Are the first three I got.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Probably playing a roguelike game or the Critically Acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14

How Dacota runs games

I'm a person who enjoys Roleplaying above most other parts of TTRPGs, while I enjoy the glorious moments of winning a boss fight or surviving against the odds I find those moments fall kind of flat if the stakes for them are not the loss of characters that the group has grown to enjoy. I tend to run light hearted campaigns focusing on the escape away from the real world around us and rather enjoying a fantastical environment of a world that I enjoy building with my players. Creating a 10 page document about your world is fine and good but I prefer to work with players to fill in the parts that are most important to them and work with them on that. One on one sessions are just as important as the big getting together games that we would all join together for.

My favorite trope is...

Community coming together against a great evil. Anytime I see a group of people pushed to a brink yet standing up to face a clearly over powered foe I get a little teary eyed. Also Capitalism is the BBEG as a trope is always good.

Rules are...

flexible, I would much rather have fun at the table than trip over a rug pull of a rule not fitting into what we as a table need. Obviously rules are there for balance, and some folks have fun inside of the rules which I respect but it's better to have a little lean to you.

When it comes to voices

it can be kind of hit or miss. I'm not exactly good at accents and can in fact pick up others accents when talking if I listen too much. My NPCs tend to work more around inflexion and pitch rather than actual accents more or less.

Dacota's ideal table

Featured Prompts

I am for a vibe that's...

Collabrative and relaxed. Obviously there will be tense moments in Roleplay and combat as that is the interesting parts of the game but I like to say I run my games like 70% serious and 30% comedy, jokes are welcome as long as they don't shatter important moments for your other players.

I love it when a player

takes inniative to ask a question without prodding, or adds on a piece of world lore to my world when talking in a session 0.

My table is not the place for...

Bigotry, facism, racism or hate of any kind. I'm an openly Queer man who does not tolerate those kinds of things. TTRPGs are a space where we can move away from the terrible shit of the real world for a time.
