About Nate

My goal is to foster immersive, collaborative storytelling. Your characters truly shape the world. No two games are ever the same. I prefer mysteries, investigations, and role playing. I run worlds that are not too different from our own, but with a twist. Expect a bit of sci fi, or speculative fiction, or alternative historical fiction, with some heists, mysteries.... and maybe the supernatural, the occult, the magical -- or just some conspiracies, secret societies... or the "unknown" just seeping in from the corners. My players should enjoy each session. Their characters may be in danger, but the players can be confident in a deliberate, measured sense of stakes. Inclusivity, safety, and respect are at the heart of my table. Just because your character is having a panic attack is no reason the player should, too! I strive to ensure each player feels heard and has a genuine impact on the unfolding narrative -- both in game, and at the meta level through safety tools and good communication. I don't home-brew systems, and have very few house rules, except that we are telling an interesting story, not figuring out a math equation. Gaming is my creative outlet, and a favorite context for social interaction. We are here to have fun together. Shall we go? You and I? While we still can?

How Nate runs games

My passion for TTRPGs extends all the way back to AD&D -- and I thought it stopped back there, too. But then it came back around... Now I gravitate more toward the Call of Cthulhu lineage, where storytelling, role playing, and solving mysteries, are often more important for survival than hit points, AC, and leveling up. (Don't get me wrong. I still play some D&D5.5, and other systems, too.) While I enjoy campaigns, some of the best stories are more brief, still episodic, yet can be completed in a handful of sessions. I also love a well constructed one shot. When done right (pre-gens provided, rules learned during play and not dumped on the players before the session starts), one shots give us a fully satisfying experience that doesn't require a lot of prep, or a lot of play time, or a complicated ongoing scheduling commitment. It's a great way to expand one's horizons, learn new games -- and meet new players, new tables, and new GMs. Much of the success of a table is ultimately the responsibility of the Game Master, but it also falls onto the players to make sure they are working with the game master and with the other players. We need to work together in the interest of collaborative story telling, creating a safe and inclusive situation, and having some roleplaying fun. I strive in every session to help each player feel engaged and involved in the story in a meaningful way, so that the collaboration part of the story telling is as easy as possible -- but no one should feel obligated to participate more than they like, or in ways they don't enjoy. Boundaries will be respected. My door is always open.
