About Dave

I've been GMing for over 8 years, sometimes running one game and sometimes running three. I'm familiar with both adventure modules and homebrew campaigns, and I love incorporating character backstories into the game and world.

I became a GM because

I'm the guy who reads the rules for board game night so that everyone understands them and can play the game. It came very naturally to me, and I love entertaining people.

My favorite shows/movies are

Slasher horror movies (Friday the 13th, Evil Dead) as well as action flicks (Castlevania animes, John Wick).

When I'm not running games I'm...

I'm always checking out new systems and taking in entertainment in the forms of movies, video games, and music.

How Dave runs games

I've been told that my combat, while sometimes tough, is fair. Whatever system I'm running has a focus of fun. We laugh, make jokes, but always come back to the action.

I deal with rules issues by...

I don't want the session to get bogged down by rules/ruling debates. If it comes to the point that it's taking longer than it should, I'll make a ruling then and come back to it before the next session, addressing my final ruling then, changing it going forward if need be.

My favorite trope is...

Found family. When the party realizes that they have a lot more in common with each other than they originally thought, oh, man! Chef's kiss!

When it comes to voices

I have a select few that I choose from. I won't say I'll remember Stinky Joe's voice from 30 sessions ago, but I'll give it a go and we'll have fun. If there isn't a distinct voice, I'll definitely give the NPC some personality in the way the I use my natural voice.

Dave's ideal table

My ideal table is one where everyone gets along and includes each other when able. The vibe would be lighthearted, but serious when it calls for it. However, I'm not afraid to call out antagonistic players. We're here to have fun and tell fun stories, after all. When the players care about the world, the NPCs, each other... that's the good stuff. That's my goal.

I am for a vibe that's...

Somewhere between beer and pretzels TTRPG night and an RP heavy narrative. We're here to have fun and tell great stories.

I think metagaming...

Personally, I think metagaming can give a sense of "Oh, crap. I, the player, know what this creature is. My character does not." And if you play that well, it can be quite exciting when you come out on the other side.

I think min/maxing...

Is fine in the right group. If you have one player min/maxing while the others are not, it can feel pretty one-sided. Have the players talk it out and see if that's something they're interested in.
