About GM Underdark

Welcome! Thank you for considering me as the GM of your game! Some tidbits about me–I am a writer, 3D artist, veteran, and family man. You could consider me a “forever” GM that began running TTRPG campaigns of all sorts some 35 years ago. I have been running sessions on Roll20 for 9 years. I have certainly enjoyed being on the other side of games being a player, but I guess I am addicted to being a GM! What is my GMing style? Every person at my table are respected and valued. I know the rules well and love to help new players. I enjoy helping you with character creation, backstory and other aspects of character concepts. I am as easy-going as they come, so nothing really gets me bent out of shape at any point–but I do ask for respect for all at our table. I enjoy working with the players on the story of their characters and weaving their story into the campaign. I am all about voice acting for the many NPC personalities you will encounter, playing music to set the mood of the scene, and living the “rule of cool” for the sake of story. Most of the games I run are gritty, which I will explain below Ask me about my CUSTOM GAMES!

How GM Underdark runs games

MY GOAL My goal is for the entire table to have fun during every session! TYPICAL STYLE 35% - Combat 35% - Roleplay 20% - Exploration 10% - Puzzles These percentages are what I typically find myself doing when I GM. But when I start a campaign, I speak with the table about what they want those percentages to look like! I do love for players to be In Character as much as possible. This certainly helps with the session experience! CAMPAIGNS I OFFER The campaigns I offer are custom campaigns using the 5e System (2014 or 2024). I am willing to run: - D&D 5e (Forgotten Realms, Eberron) - Star Wars 5e (most any timeline!) - Stargate 5e - Carbon 2185 (5e cyberpunk system) - Midnight: Legacy of Darkness (5e campaign setting) - 5e Custom Science Fiction Campaign (ask me about it!) - 5e Custom Fantasy Campaign (ask me about it!) I love GMing tables in which the PCs are a part of major canon events. Death Star blew up? The PCs had a part in that. Lolth went silent? You know the real reason why. PCs are emerging heroes - they should feel like it! WHAT MY CAMPAIGN SESSIONS ARE LIKE - Music - run all my sessions with appropriate, immersive music - Maps - provide the perfect map for the perfect situation - NPCs - experience recurring NPCs complete with distinct voices, accents, and personalities - Downtime - provide an opportunity for PCs to receive bonuses for the things they do when not "adventuring" - Reputation - each character has a Reputation score that gives you various benefits! - Crafting (optional) - making available custom crafting rules, no matter the campaign or setting - Custom Tokens - happy to provide custom tokens and portraits for your PCs! - Visual Aids - adding to the immersion of the session with notes, communication, images, portraits, and other elements of the world your PC is in! - Combat Challenge - running combats in which the PCs are challenged, but never insurmountable. This is a "dial" that we can turn down or turn up, depending on the table. Does your table like more story with little threat of character death? Does your table like gritty combat with very real possibility of character death? This part is discussed with the table before we begin! Every table is different! - Humor - while the story can get really serious with emotional moments, we are here to have fun. Humor is always included in my games at appropriate moments. - Gritty - almost all of my games have a realistic grit to them--bad things happen to good people. Often, this means that political correctness goes out the window in a realistic world. You are often the "good guys" and that means you will often face dark enemies and dark situations. Your villains are real, believable villains. For example, if I run a campaign in the Underdark, your PCs will encounter discrimination, slavery, torture, etc. according to the lore that was written for that group of elves. If I run Star Wars, there is corruption and the slide to the Dark Side--that can be ugly. However, we will talk about what is on the table and off the table before we begin! It is about what you want in your game! - Dial It Back! - the themes in my game can carry dark elements. if there are themes or elements that you do not care for, send me a direct message and I will subtly redirect and bring it down. I will always respect the players at my table! WHAT SETS ME APART FROM OTHER GMs? - Gritty campaigns in which the characters are challenged, but emerge as true heroes - Custom Campaigns are my specialty. I sometimes steal tidbits from published modules, but just the facets that I like. If you have an idea for a campaign or a character, I can probably accommodate you! - Two sandbox custom 5e worlds to play in: one fantasy and one science fiction. Ask me about it to see if it fits your group! - Background Incorporation: when you write a background, I use every bit of it in the story. It might be in the first session or the thirtieth session. Pay attention to what you write! - Total Package: music, maps, voice acting, rules knowledge, etc. I do all the things that makes sessions worth every penny! TABLE ETIQUETTE - Respect for person at the table. This means please keep politics, sexuality, religion and other controversial elements out of our OOC conversations. We are here to have fun--not to give any of us a platform. - Remember that you are not the only PC at the table. - Please be on time. Your tardiness affects other players. - Please give as much notice as possible if you will miss a session. This helps me plan for the rest of the players at the table. - Rules Lawyering is a discussion outside of game sessions. If I am wrong about a rule, tell me and I will fix it on the spot--but I will not engage in a rules discussion during a session. This ruins the fun for the entire table. The show must go on! VARIATIONS USED - Custom Backgrounds - Each new character is given one Legacy "magic item" that grows in power as the character levels - Each new character will have three contacts to start with. We can work together and determine what and who those contacts are!

I prep by

I prep by taking many hours to prep maps, NPCs, combats, and interactions. I want to make sure I am ready to present my players with a wonderful experience!

My games focus on...

Character Development, Epic Stories, and Overcoming Adversity

When it comes to voices

When it comes to voices, I am going to throw the gambit of accents, tone, and speech patterns at my players. Some are better than others!

GM Underdark's ideal table

My tables are characteristically laid-back. I want to keep real world politics, religion, and other controversial areas out of my games. We play these games to have fun, escape, and get away from those things. You will certainly see these themes in game. My tables are based on mutual respect. I am proud of the fact that OOC drama hardly every rears its head at my tables. It is just a good time had by all. Plenty of humor, tense moments, and moments of accomplishment happen.
