About Josie Han

I have been playing D&D 5th edition for about five years and have primarily DMed published modules with my own modifications mostly for player backstory or for quality of life improvement. Some of my favorite campaigns to run and play include Dungeon of the Mad Mage, Tales from the Yawning Portal, and Rime of the Frostmaiden. I view 5th edition as a storytelling game first, with mechanics and roleplay working together to support the story being told at the table.

How Josie Han runs games

I run games largely rules as written with the rule of cool for flavor rather than mechanical advantage. I do not allow player-versus-player conflict, explicit romance, or gratuitous violence, as these are not themes I am interested in exploring. I also do not use game mechanics to punish players or “teach lessons” and find that player agency lies in the character they create.

I deal with rules issues by...

I try to know the rules and interaction of whatever system I run with any homebrew and variant rule established beforehand. If I made a mistake in understanding the rules, please give me the page or errata. If you would like a reinterpretation, give a rationale and I will consider it.

I think metagaming...

I run modules whos points are to modular and can look wildly different game to game. Metagaming the story will give you false expecation of a plot you control. Doing so for encounter is a real Richard Relocation.

I think min/maxing...

As a player, it is my great dnd sin. As a dm, I think players want to feel like they are useful so try to build for a role or a thing youre good at. Don't min/max a sorcerer, min/max a mind mage who enchant the memories of those around him.
