About Charlie

Hi friends! I'm Charlie. I've been playing tabletops in some form or another for a decade, and I've been GMing for about half that time. I consider myself a helpful, enthusiastic GM who loves player enthusiasm and creativity, and I like for my games to have range - from lots of lighthearted fun to serious moments of drama, horror, or emotion. Fun fact - my other job is 'romance writer', and I love bringing my character writing experience to the table with lovable NPCs for my players to interact with and complex villains for them to love to hate.

My favorite books are

I'm a big reader, so it's hard to pick favorites. Anything by Octavia Butler or Carmen Maria Machado will be up there, Dungeon Meshi & Saga are my favorite comics, Richard Siken is my favorite poet, The Hunger Games is my nostalgic favorite, and I've recently been wanting to read more Akwaeke Emezi!

My favorite system of all Time is

Pathfinder 2E is the primary system I'll always come back to. It's perfect for the kind of high fantasy campaigns I run, with a good mix of action and roleplay. Alternatively - PF 1E. It's not a system I'd run these days, but it'll always have a special place in my heart for getting me into TTRPGS!

How Charlie runs games

I favor a roleplay heavy game, but a good measure of nice, crunchy combat is important to me! Players should expect a vibrant world full of lovable (or delightfully hateable!) NPCs, dangerous combat, and satisfying social encounters. I love a living world, even when that life isn't directly related to the main point of the campaign. Finding out that the Baker's having an affair, that the Mayor's daughter is trying to become a bard, that the co-leaders of the Adventurer's Guild hate each other's guts and have been harboring a passive aggressive rivalry for years - I think those are the little, breathing details that make settings fun and worth saving from the BBEG. Though I mostly reach for PF2E as my system of choice, a lot of my GM experience is in Monster of the Week. It's a system that forces GMs to get really comfortable with roleplay, improvisation, talking things out rather than always falling back on mechanics, building compelling mysteries, and, most importantly to me, being huge fans of their players! I bring all of those lessons with me to every other system. Expect a GM who cheers your successes and commiserates your failures right along with you. I'll never pull my punches, but I'll be just as invested as you in how they land.
