About Kevin Hadley

I have been playing TTRPGs since 1997. I am a former engineering professor. As such, teaching, integrated systems, and the math are my favorite parts of playing. I master the complicated bits, so you do not have to. I am intimately familiar with D&D (all editions) and HERO. I am also very knowledgeable in Pathfinder. I have been digging into Daggerheart and Final Fantasy XIV TTRPG.

My favorite system of all Time is

HERO 6th edition. Super cool, super versatile.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Knowledgeable, strategic, intriguing.

When I'm not running games I'm...

editing rulebooks for board games.

How Kevin Hadley runs games

My GM style is a 65/35 split between combat/RP. I typically do not run 100% original stories. Rather, I adapt published modules, especially between systems. My games focus more on tactical gameplay, dungeon crawling, and solving puzzles (e.g., exploring how to get past security without a fight). My games do have roleplaying. I like having interaction between NPCs and PCs. My games are just not "narrative"-driven. I am not a theater major, so weaving elaborate storylines with subplots and such is out of my wheelhouse. I encourage creative choices or character use. My narrative prowess stems from describing what happens in an encounter. Rather than just, "Roll to hit. You hit. Roll Damage." I take the result and flesh out a more cinematic description. "You gear up for another blow. Drawing all of your strength into the swing, you slam your hammer hard into their chest. You clearly see the wind is knocked out of them and they are starting to second guess their choice in engaging you toe-to-toe."

Featured Prompts

I deal with rules issues by...

playing things by ear and doing what is best for the flow of the story (and the players).

My games focus on...

strategic battles and puzzle-y dungeon crawling.

Rules are...

important, but a guideline for playing versus a immutable fact.

Kevin Hadley's ideal table

Looking for a good time. Willing to roleplay, but prefers "playing the game." All about creating interesting characters that get into interesting situations (combat oriented or otherwise). Ok with with pre-defined scenarios as long as the game/story flows and the DM manages it well. Encourages creative ideas/solutions to problems. Patient with all types of players.

Featured Prompts

I love it when a player

attempts to solve a problem with a very unorthodox approach.

I think it's a red flag when players...

do things that are selfish and "harmful" to other players. This includes abandoning allies, stealing from PCs, and general negativity towards how other players act/play.

I think metagaming...

is ok in small doses. Try to immerse yourself into your character and play them as they would behave, not how it would be best to behave.
