About Laurel

The name's Laurel. I've been a game master since 2018, and have been loving it ever since. I enjoy weaving stories with my players that would be right at home in your favorite novel. I run long term campaigns, and use modules and random encounters as brainstorming tools. In my games you will never face the same problem twice, and I always use player backstories in every adventure. My favorite games are sci-fi settings, with a smattering of horror. Examples include Deadlands: Hell on Earth, Shadowrun, and Cyberpunk.

I became a GM because

I have the urge to make a story, but no man is an island. I love running because people have an amazing imagination when brought together.

My favorite books are

Gaunt's Ghosts Series, by Dan Abnett. Dresden Files Series, by Jim Butcher.

My favorite system of all Time is

Savage Worlds. Fast combat, and leaves plenty of flexibility to change the rules on the fly.

How Laurel runs games

My style of GMing is very roleplay heavy. I like to resolve (some) actions without rolling to build atmosphere. "Without needing to roll for detection, you can feel the presence of something otherworldly and malicious pulsing around you." All players at my table are encouraged to interact with the game world as a sandbox, giving people the chance to write a tale with the rest of the table. Collaboration with your fellow players helps not only flesh out a players' experience with the game world, but also allows me to tailor the player's wants into the story. I mainly run Savage Worlds, and keep to the adage, "Fast, Furious, Fun," That said, there's always room for situational rolls. If someone wants to base jump off a ramp with a motor bike into melee combat, we turn that into a cinematic moment where we're rolling to see if you suffer consequences from this, rather than if you succeed or fail. There will rarely be random encounters in any of my games. I don't run modules, I love making my own stuff with each player character weaving the story.

Laurel's ideal table

The tone of the table is always set by the players, but my settings lean toward the serious. Hell on Earth is a wasteland where society failed and monsters reign. Shadowrun and Cyberpunk are end stage capitalism turned up to 11 and the real crimes we see on news every day is made just as worse. These settings while deadly serious leave much room for humor, and I welcome joke/meme characters at my table, only if they are willing to interact with the story as a serious one would be expected to. TL:DR My table is high stakes but leaves rooms for laughs and memes.
