About the adventure

Do you have what it takes to plunder the wealth of Waterdeep? Waterdeep: The City of Splendors. It’s said that anything can be found in the shining jewel of the Sword Coast, for the right price. It’s bustling streets are full of beings from all walks of life, from the local Waterdavians and the Noble Elite to the traders and merchants from far off Calimshan and Chult. It’s a city where dreams come true, and nightmares stalk the shadows at night. Amidst all the bustle and splendor, there sits the most famous tavern in all the land: The Yawning Portal. Adventurers and mercenaries from all along the Sword Coast call the rowdy establishment home while visiting the city. Each night is bound to bring bawdy tales, tavern brawls, and the chance to see an adventuring party descend down the titular Yawning Portal into Undermountain. Or maybe just to see some poor fool get tossed over the edge. This is where your story begins. Through one path or another, life has lead you to a seat in the darkened drinking hall of the Yawning Portal. The hearth is roaring, the patrons are shouting, and the air is alive with the smell of adventure... Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is an urban adventure for D&D 5e. This isn’t a grand trek through the Wilds, or an epic quest to save the world. This campaign is more about swashbuckling action, cloak & dagger subterfuge, and sinister plots to gain power where it counts. There are gang wars, crooked politicians, and hidden threats to the city that the locally based PCs are best situated to handle. You’ll have the chance to join famous factions of the Sword Coast like the Harpers, the Zhentarim, the Lords Alliance, and more. This campaign takes place completely within the walls of Waterdeep, as well the Dungeon of the Mad Mage. It’s packed with adventure and opportunity for new adventurers. Don’t think that this won’t be epic and dangerous. The city holds many surprises. This game will run from 7:00PM to 10:00PM EST on Monday every week. Paying for a spot in this campaign means that we are all respecting each other's commitment to playing and running the game. After completing Waterdeep: Dragon Heist (Levels 1-5), we will dive into Dungeon of the Mad Mage (Levels 5-20) with opportunities to explore character backstories and other homebrew plots.

How to prepare

Players will need a good quality mic and internet to participate in this game. We will use Discord for Voice and text, Roll20 for maps and handouts, and DndBeyond for character sheets and dice rolling. I am using the Avrae dice bot in DIscord to link everyone's character sheets to our server.

What I provide

I will be providing content sharing for DnD Beyond content for this campaign. I have music and combat tracks, I will also be providing custom maps for this campaign for both Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and Waterdeep: Dungeon on the Mad Mage.

Gameplay details

During Session 0, we will review the general tone of the game and go over any content warnings that may cause issues. I will send out an anonymous Google Form for everyone to add their Lines and Veils. We will be using digital X, N, and O cards since I may have to look at multiple screens and books while GMing and may not always be watching our chat as closely. After finishing a session, I will always check in with the group to gauge how everyone is doing. Players are encouraged to message me directly if they don't feel comfortable voicing feedback in the group. I expect everyone to be respectful of the other players and myself. Please try to be aware of when it’s time to let someone else have a turn in the spotlight. I also will not tolerate hostile sexism, racism, homophobia or transphobia or anything like that in my games.

How will character creation work

1. You will be making your character at Level 1 on DndBeyond. 3. We will create characters during Session 0 so everyone has a chance to brainstorm ideas and build the adventuring party together. 3. You will be rolling for stats using 4d6d1, with a minimum total score of 70 (rerolling lowest scores first). You will roll for stats three times, and pick the set you like the most. If you don’t want to roll, you can use 27 Point Buy. 4. I’m fine with Neutral Evil or Lawful Evil characters, but no Chaotic Evil as an excuse to RP horrible things. 5. All official WOTC content is allowed, including Critical Role content. *Tasha’s optional rules are allowed. 6. Additional character backgrounds from the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide that will be relevant in this campaign: - City Watch - Clan Crafter - Cloistered Scholar - Courtier - Faction Agent - Far Traveler - Inheritor - Knight of the Order - Mercenary Veteran - Urban Bounty Hunter - Uthgardt Tribe Member - Waterdavian Noble 7. It is encouraged that characters either be from Waterdeep, or have some strong connection to the city or a reason to be there. If you don’t want to be from Waterdeep, think about where in Faerun your character is coming from and why they have ended up in the City of Splendors. Or if your character is from a different world, how did they get here and why?
