About the adventure

On the ragged edge of Federation space, where the Triangle’s shadows meet the Neutral Zone’s ghosts, the U.S.S. Sentinel (NCC-75421), a sleek Nova-class scout, stands as Starfleet’s eyes and first line of defense. Equipped for long-range surveys, stealthy reconnaissance, and rapid response, she is no battleship—yet her crew of scientists, diplomats, intelligence officers, and specialists must hold the line against a rising storm in the wake of the Dominion War. The Imperial Klingon States (IKS), a rogue splinter empire born from a failed 23rd-century coup, still thrives in the Triangle. Proclaiming themselves the only true Klingons—unsoftened by Khitomer, unallied with “weakling” Federation ideals—they have grown bold. Raids escalate into border provocations; propaganda paints the UFP-Klingon alliance as betrayal. Intelligence whispers of a grand invasion: massing fleets, secret shipyards, and agents sowing discord among frontier colonies, Orion cartels, and wavering Klingon houses. The IKS seeks glory through conquest, resources for a strike at Qo’noS itself—and the Federation frontier is their first prize. Aboard the Sentinel, you are not conquerors but guardians of the fragile peace. Your missions blend: Espionage & Intrigue: Infiltrate IKS listening posts and black-market dens. Unmask shape-shifting saboteurs, double agents, and twisted conspiracies. Decode encrypted transmissions revealing invasion timetables or internal IKS power struggles. Diplomacy: Broker uneasy truces with local powers, rally independent worlds, and navigate tense talks with official Klingon Empire envoys who view the IKS as both kin and embarrassment. One wrong word could spark war—or avert it. Exploration: Chart unstable nebulae, ancient ruins, and unclaimed systems that hide dilithium veins, wormhole anomalies, or forgotten weapons the IKS covets. Every discovery is a strategic asset—or a trap. The tone is tense Cold War thriller meets classic Trek wonder: moral gray areas, personal honor vs. duty, the cost of vigilance. Combat is rare, desperate, and consequential—victory comes through cunning, alliances, and bold exploration. As IKS dreadnoughts gather and frontier outposts fall silent, the Sentinel’s crew must uncover the invasion’s architects, fracture the rogue state from within, and prove that the Federation’s light endures even in the darkest marches. Will you hold the frontier… or watch the Empire’s shadows swallow it? Qapla’—and godspeed.

About me

I’ve been running games for as long as I can remember, more than thirty years at this point; I make my living as a science-fiction author, have done for a decade, with the occasional dip into fantasy and historical fiction. I’ve a few RPG credits to my name; I was heavily involved in the adaptation of one of my settings, ‘Battlecruiser Alamo’, a few years back, and I’ve done some work in the OSR, running a fanzine called OD&DITIES back in the day. Growing up, I ran an awful lot of D&D, but in recent years I’ve found myself drawn to other games; I’ve run multiple campaigns of Star Trek Adventures over the last three years, and had two Star Wars campaigns going at once at one point. I’ve been a Star Trek fan for longer than I’ve been a gamer, and love to delve deep into the lore to find fun things to anchor games around. Having a bookshelf full of Star Trek novels is a real benefit! I always run a completely inclusive table; I wouldn’t know how to do anything else. My focus in campaigns tends to be on storytelling and character progression, and it’s always immense fun to watch a campaign twist and turn as the sessions progress. I tend heavily towards the Rule of Cool, and prefer narrative systems that allow for player buy-in, just to ensure the wonderful chaos that can ensue. Above all, I believe that the purpose of a campaign is to have a good time, to have fun, and that is my Prime Directive!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Creation will take place prior to the first session, with discussion among the players on the Discord server to ensure that each player has their niche; the use of the online character creator (https://sta.bcholmes.org/index.html) is strongly recommended, and I will be available to provide support as needed, both on the server and individually.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Before the game, you'll need to join the Discord server and create a character; the GM will happily provide full guidance and support where needed. If you haven't played this game before, a look at the free Quick-Start rules is recommended.

What Richard brings to the table

Thirty years of experience as a DM and twelve years as a novelist, a comprehensive collection of rule books and endless knowledge of Star Trek lore. The campaign will be run using Theatre of the Mind, and both I and the system are extremely supportive of the Rule of Cool!

Safety

How Richard creates a safe table

Before play begins, we will discuss the campaign and gameplay style on the Discord Server, as well as at the start of the first session, a break will be taken in the middle of the session with a debrief at the end, and an open door policy will be available. Prior to the first session, I will contact each player individually to discuss any issues that might arise during the campaign. This is meant to be fun for everyone, and all support necessary will be available to make sure that it is.
